Please, please, PLEASE could there be a way to specify the origin point on primitives? I try to do things mathematically -- but since the origin point is ALWAYS in the center of the primitive, I have to do four times as much work to figure out where it should be located. (A carpenter does not deal with 'the center of this 2x4 beam is four meters left, 6 cm down, and 3 cm ahead. I'd rather have the ability to reference my primitives from an arbitrary vertex instead of always having to try to take into account offsets from the centerpoint.)

As well, if a calculator could be built into the SL interface, it would make calculations for primitive positioning a lot easier. Otherwise, I keep having to alt-tab out to Excel, which causes a bunch of trouble when I alt-tab back into it, because of the rerendering delay.)

I used to have the same problem, but over time I not only got used to it, I was able to know exactly the math involved without having to use a calculator. Give it time and you will also get used to it.
