How about syndicating the Leader Boards, Upcoming Events, New World Notes, etc as with RSS so they could be added to community websites and brought into blog readers?
This would add value for residents, increase profile and aid affiliate programs

Personally, i'd still rather see the Leader Boards gone entirely.
I gave away L$100,000 just to get myself off of them.

Yeah, I've done things similar to what' si did, especially after 1.2. Can we opt out of being on the leader boards?

Whats RSS?
And why wouldn't you want to be on leader boards?

Heh, why would you not want to be on the leader boards? Hmm, let me think... When I was at the top of all the leader boards, (except money) I would get IMs from 5-15 different people a day, all looking for help. This would be fine, except they were --without exception-- questions like, "how do I close SL?" and "how do I get points?" In the eyes of many a newbie, I was THE "best" person in SL and therefore the best person to ask for help. After all, I wouldn't be in the top slot otherwise, would I? As if that weren't irritating enough, there were quite a few residents in SL who were absolutely furious that I was "beating" them. How DARE I cheat them out of their rightful spot as "top resident"! Thankfully, a couple of them actually had the right idea, which was that the insane leader boards system was the mechanism by which our stipend bonus was calculated, meaning that if I was higher than them on the list, I was getting money that they weren't. And of course I was -- I couldn't have afforded my gigantic mansion without it. The combination of beancounters and newbies proved to be too annoying, and given that I had "burned out" on newbies, I found I had no desire to spend time teaching newbies how to chat or build, just to get a calling card and a rate. At all. ...so I came up with a new method of making money: hacking! Nah, I just sold stuff. The point is, if you're on the leader boards, particularly in the top spot, you will eventually have to deal with the dumbest and most annoying people in SL. (RSS, by the way, stands for "Rich Site Summary". It's an XML format for "syndicating" news headlines and similar data from one site to another. Most of the big portals and a lot of news sites use it. It's just a standard way of distributing content.)

Maybe I should start a bank so I can get on the boards and then help people =D
You have to admit though that there's not much in the UI for newbies to go by to know who to ask for help. There's no UI system that lists the current Liasons, Mentors, or Instructors who are online. Newbies need something which is simple point and click to easily find and quickly access people who are willing to help.
At least now I have a good excuse for trying to amass wealth =D

I wouldn't mind seeing the RSS thing...
But being able to opt out of the leader boards... I dunno, why not just NOT have leader boards at all then? If half the people can and do opt out of being on them it becomes kind of pointless to have them.
I think instead of opt out, to resolve the hassling from newbies add a "Get Help" button that will open up an IM to a Liason or Mentor or something.
I like the leader boards, they give a goal when I want one. If people could opt out of being on them it would pretty much ruine the whole concept of it.

From: someone Originally posted by Catherine Omega ...RSS, by the way, stands for "Rich Site Summary"... Huh. I always thought it stood for "Really Simple Syndication"... but I guess both those and "RDF Site Summary" are all valid.

I never got bugged by newbies, instead I got interrogated any time I did anything, because people decided I was only out to take money from people. It got progressively worse from there, but suffice it to say I don't care to ever be on the leader boards, as too many people in SL like to randomly make accusations about people.

I think RSS should instead stand for RSS Site Summary or RSS Site Syndication GNU's Not Unix, WINE Is Not an Emulator... you know the drill

We could do RSS feeds for the forums as well. I'm starting to use this and it'd be nice instead of having to visit a 100 different websites..

New World Notes already has an RSS feed: http://secondlife.blogs.com/nwn/index.rdf or username hamletlinden if you have a Livejournal and want it syndicated on your friends page.
