In order to make flying games more realistic, would it be possible to designate large spaces above the regular sims to one single sim?
This way there would not be the drop-out effect that occurs when crossing sim borders when people are using large fast-moving flying vehicles.
The load on this sim would typically very low, since only people with vehicles that exceed 768m would be able to be part of this sim, and virtually all SL activity happens on the ground anyway. The sky itself is fairly bare and empty.
To keep sim load as low as possible, this sim could be limited to temporary-only prims with a max life of 1 hour. This way racers can use object-creating vehicles, but those effects are forced to auto-disappear 1 hour after the start of the racing event.

It was my understanding that above some height (4096m? higher?) there is only one "space sim". Couldn't you have your races there, with avatars acting as markers?

And I think no avatars can go up to "Space Sim" either, isn't it? At some limit I've heard the objects will be unrezzed, autometicly. Maybe, someday in the future, LL will research technology that let AV to travel to outer space and beyond?

Avatars, however, CAN pass this point. I believe I was the first to pass MAXINT meters (two billion meters, roughly, or in solar-system terms about 5 times as far as the moon... take THAT, Neil Armstrong!) back in October, though Beatfox has since surpassed my attempts by orders of magnitude... From: someone Maybe, someday in the future, LL will research technology that let AV to travel to outer space and beyond? We don't need to wait, we have the technology, we can rebuild it... erm... build it. The only problem is that you couldn't fly vehicles up there, but Giant Mecha should be no problem...
