Just curious about the client side cache location (path) and size limits...

1:

Is there any special reason that we cannot be given the ability to point the cache to the location of OUR choosing in the prefrences screen?

I would like to be able to move it to some other drive/partiton than C:/...

I regularly make backups of my C: partition and feel that backing up that extra Gb of throwaway temp files is a big waste of time and resources (external archive disk space) This also greatly reduces aggravation with defrag issues associated with lots of small files getting created and deleted all the time...

I would be very happy to put the cache in it's own dedicated partition similar to my setup for \tmp files, internet cache files, etc... It's a small space that I could care less how much it frags as it can't affect anything else on the system. And as it's not on C: I don't get all that junk in my backups either. ;)

2:

As to the size of the cache... Is there some technical reason to limit it to 1 Gb max? If it takes too long to load the cache DB if it's bigger than that or something, that's an ok reason I guess. If the max size is mearly an arbitrary limit, why stop at 1 Gb?

I'd be happy to dedicate 100Gb or so to a local SL cache. This would have many benefits both to me and to SL/LL.

client response times would massively improve as there would be a much greater chance of a cache hit rather than a fresh download each time I visit any given simm and the bandwidth useage from SL would drop for the very same reason... Gotta be some huge cost savings in there with the amount of traffic generated by even a single session...

Set at 1 Gb now, I've had this situation while playing tringo in a heavily built up area:
1: play tringo for a while.
2: between games, pan camera view around (wait while stuff rezzez... tum-te-tum-te-tum... ;) )
3: ok, next game is starting! pan back to look at the main board and... uh-ohh... wait while the board textures rerezz from scratch again and miss the first few pieces. Well, so much for THAT round...

Thanks for listening...
