"Silently you sneak through the forest, knowing that this is a place where bandits, animals and perhaps worse roam. Suddenly, you stop, hearing the sound of footsteps, not far in the distance. You glance through the leaves.. will it be friend or foe?"
Many of those of you how have played on role-play or combat sims will know how exciting it can be to play without the minimap on. Not knowing who or what is around you or just around the corner can really add to the feel of excitement and danger. Yet, in a somewhat compatitive setting you cannot turn the minimap off, as others will not likely do so either. Seeing the green dots well in advance makes everything far less exciting, and defeats the prupose of sneaking, hiding behind walls or trees and all that.
Would it not be great if land/estate/sim-owners would be able to to turn the mini-map feature off, if they chose to do so? At least on private islands. I really think it would be a lot of fun.

Might be nice, but you still get people using radar, and frankly some forms of radar give you even more information than the minimap does.

Sounds like an excellent proposal to me. I have often wished there was no mini-map in many places. And I have tried playing without one: makes it a lot more fun and thrilling.
Sure, Radars can still be used. Would be great if there was a way to disable those as well. But the minimap is worse, I think, as in a combat situation, you may know someone is near, but not know exactly where they are. The green-dots watching makes all hiding, sneaking, ducking, climbing etc pointless.
