It would be beneficial to Linden Lab if it could have a better way of finding out what their users want. Voting on proposed features is one such way. Instead of reading through the same old repeated suggestions on these forums. The good news is that there are plenty of coders to go around, so while LL is busy fixing bugs, my good friend Hugh put together a quick script to let us do this: http://manageddreams.com/slvoting/index.cgi

I agree. And Az's voting thingy is very cool.
But, it is also beneficial to discuss the ins and outs of the suggestions too, because it can morph into something even better quite often... although its also not easy to tell at a glance how many for's and against's you have. So yes, I'd like to see polls in addition to what we have now, but not instead of.

It's good, but might lead people to think that whatever receives the most votes will automatically get fixed... which simply wouldn't happen..

Someday I hope this software drives nations instead of a person.

i still think the lindens (not we, they) need an inworld polling ui. there will be a place to submit polling suggestions and to vote on currently open polls.
everybody in the world will be able to submit and vote, not just a few forum puppies. it's too easy and necessary a feature to add for them to not add it.

Just some quick info on how the site works:
- anyone can add a feature at any time - you have 10 votes that you can share arbitrarily amonst the features you like best. You can assign 1 vote to 10 features, 10 votes to a single feature, or some compromise between the two - features are presented most popular first. Any feature with 0 votes is immediately deleted.
Safeguards against ballot-stuffing etc:
- you need to have a SecondLife avatar to vote, to prevent ballot stuffing. You will be given an Activation object during registration which you use to validate your avatar to the site - all votes can be viewed anonymously, so you can check that your vote has been added in correctly, and verify that the vote count is correct (click on the title of a feature to bring up the Feature Detail page with a list of all votes).
Re: comments
In the future, we might add the possibility of either adding comments to a feature suggestion, or at least specifying a URL that points to a forum thread that discusses it. For now, you could just add the URL directly into the feature suggestion description perhaps?
I'm currently liaising with Cory and Robin Linden on the extent to which the site will be integrated into the Linden decision-making process, but obviously the more people add their votes and feature suggestions, the more weight it will carry.
Please dont hesitate to IM me with any questions or comments.

And when we could have Stage 4 discussion re: whatever topic LL was polling us about. We sometimes forget how small the number of forum posters are.

I agree, in-world and on forum voting systems would be nice.
You know, someone could easily script up a in-world voting system.

Um, I get the feeling that the impression given above is that this is a one-shot polling system? Which it is not.
Basically, it is designed to consolidate all the feature requests that come through, in one place, so that they can be effectively prioritized.
Pretty sure this would be tough to do in-world?

We will probably add a forum with a thread for each suggestion being linked to from the main voting interface. I would like to invite you all to promote this system and use it as often as possible in order to gauge its usefulness. Democracy can never be a fair system unless the sample is large enough to be truly representative of the people's will
