I'd like to second the opinion that discussing dramatic changes to the user interface with the residents might be a stellar idea.
Please do keep in mind that the UI is not only a chat interface, but a suite of tools for builders. Tools we're engaged with on a daily basis as we create content.
Some pretty major changes were implemented, not the least of which was the deprecation of alt/wasd which I use constantly, and this one in particular seems utterly random. Consider this post a formal request to re-implement it.
Thanks in advance.
Alex Trilling.

Consider this post a formal request to re-implement it. It's NOT random. Alt-w/e/c/s all open menus now (as do alt-f/v/t/h), like in most other applications.

And command-w closes the current window, command-e searches for the currently selected text, command-c copies, and command-s saves.

Because alt-f right now opens the File menu in FireFox.

From: Draco18s Majestic What kind of computer with what kind of keyboard? Because alt-f right now opens the File menu in FireFox. I'm using a generic PC-94 keyboard on my computer, but no matter what keyboard I've ever used on my last three desktops and my new laptop alt-f has always produced that ƒ "Folder" symbol, and cmd-f brings up the "find" panel. I understand that Windows standardized on the behaviour you mentioned for desktop applications using Microsoft's standard libraries, and in that context when I'm using Windows it works well. However, I don't know of any game software that works that way, even on Windows... perhaps requesting "system user interface controls" should be a preferences option, next to "use system color picker". That would be great, because it would allow me the option of using alt-keys to enter international and extended characters on my Mac.

Interesting. I guess they didn't know that the Mac is set up slightly differently for the alt-[letter] key combos.

I'll be learnign Linux as soon as it decides to cooperate and work on my machine (it was freezing in the install process and then I brought over someone who knew more than I did and watched me do it and low and behold it installed without a glitch--now it freezes after it boots for an unkown reason that may be related to the mouse (using the mouse causes it to freeze sooner)). I do know however that left alt/ctrl/shift and right alt/ctrl/shift are different.

Yes, most other office/web applications, but it didn't make much sense for SL to adopt this "feature." I moved the camera around all the time, and I loved being able to do it with one hand. I guarantee that I moved the camera around more often than I opened the EDIT menu. It makes sense to make the camera controls slick and easy to operate with one hand, even if it meant that all of those people who use SL just so they can open that sexy EDIT menu are forced to use their mice to do so.
