"Show as offline"

Turning off "show on map" doesn't go far enough.

In SL it's like you're always carrying a cellphone with a broadcasting GPS. I want to just leave the cellphone at home. "Away/Busy/Offline"... when you're "Offline" you don't see your friends online list, they don't see you in theirs, IMs get to you and you can reply (because you can do that through mail when you really ARE offline), items dropped on you get the "offline" message unless the dropper is in the same sim (so you can still buy stuff), and so on.

I'd prefer to have my friends list be accurate, Yahoo/MSN/AIM/ICQ all come to mind. If I'm allowed to IM, I should be allowed to know WHO'S ONLINE and quickly IM them.

I can be "in first life" at my desk without being signed in to Yahoo. I can choose not to sign in to Yahoo when I log in to my computer.

Why shouldn't I be able to choose not to sign in to IM when I'm "in second life"?

When I wrote "IMs get to you and you can reply (because you can do that through mail when you really ARE offline)" I merely meant that being in-world but "set offline" shouldn't lose your instant messages... if they don't get to your screen they mustn't stop your IMs going to email. The reason I put that in there is because when you're "set busy" you can lose stuff... because a lot of people seem to think that "set busy" is the solution.

As for me: when I'm sitting at my desk in first life but not in-world in second life you can IM me from second life and I can respond almost as fast as I can do it in first life, thanks to IM-to-Email. You're always able to IM me, so my "online" status is irrelevant.

I make it a regular and frequent habit to "Appear Offline" in MSN, actually. I am rather fond of that feature. "Busy" just doesn't work most of the time.

That's exactly what I mean. I go invisible all the time, which is what I'd expect of a similar feature in SL.

What I said was, "I don't want to lose my friends list." Check out YIM while you're invisible sometime, OMG, someone signed on and I saw it. OMG, someone else signed off. They can't see me as being around, but if I need to talk to them I can--and I know when they sign on so I can do so.

I thought this was about being mapt, which is an uness. crap stalker feature at w/e level.
Why does it even exsist?
I'd prefer hide online status entirely or gimmie the good old +i =P

IMs and the Away/Busy is another feature that needs work IMHO.

If someone wants to join me wherever I am, they can IM me and ask for a TP. Anyone who maps me runs the risk of being completely ignored.

The mapping feature is just plain ridiculous

You can see that on the web page, no?

.....Why do I need to have a web browser open to see that? And I'd STILL have to do a Search for them to IM them. Might as well have not bothered with the webpage because I can click on the search button to refresh the search a heck of a lot faster than I can click over to the web page and click refresh on that and wait for it to load to click back to SL to do the search ANYWAY.
Yeah, sounds like a brilliant plan.

And seeing as online status is a piece of freely accessable data, might as well let "appear as offline" people have access to their friends list.

I don't much care whether they do or not. I was just trying to come up with a set of characteristics for "offline" users that made sense in context, and that avoided the problems of "Busy". I would kind of like to avoid getting the "X has signed on" "X has signed off" messages when I'm in-world but offline, because I find them distracting... but it's not that big a deal for me.

Personally I'd want those pop ups. Maybe an option that when busy/offline they don't show?
