I think I have the simplest request out of all that I've seen. A simple "reconnect" button under the "file" menu. To most, this would have been forefront in designing their menu's. I don't believe that it is necessary to force the user to restart the entire client merely to reconnect, especially if it's only a network hickup.

Definitely a must-have, a button or menu option to bring the user back to the login screen. This would be quite beneficial to those with multiple accounts too, I'm sure

Goodness! I've seen this suggestion before but it's like one of those dolls that goes underwater for awhile and then starts bobbing back up over time... forget what they're called. I like the simplicity of it. So, selecting Reconnect from the would take you back to the splash screen? And, it would give you a confirm dialog to do so too (like "Are you sure..." unless, say, you had already been logged out by a simcrash? Not sure how technically possible it is, but as an idea, it's fundamentally a great idea.

I'd like Reconnect to effectively take you through the whole login process again, no splash screen, just right back in, maybe to "the nearest sim" if the sim you were in was down. If that means actually going to the login server and logging in again, that's an implementation detail.
But a Disconnect that took you to the splash screen without quitting would be nice too. That might actually be harder to implement, depending on how much state gets established in the process of logging in. It may be easier to exit and restart than to clean up all the login state.

On a similar note it would be nice if there was a reconnect button (or at the least be able to get to the menu item suggested above) when you've been logged out for inactivity.
In regards to it taking you right back to the login screen... For a menu item thats manually selected, probably a good idea... If you want to reconnect after being logged out for inactivity, I'd rather not have to go through the login screen again in that case.

How about in the file menu a "Log Out" item, that logs you out and sends you to the login screen. Then when you are disconnected a button that says "Log In" that takes you to the same login screen.

Ahh, I see. How about this, then, have a Log Off menu option that returns ya to the splash screen, and in the case of a sim crash, inactivity logoff, or something similar, have a reconnect button in the associated dialog box? No reason not to have both

No reason not to have both Well, yeh, that's what I mean by "disconnect" and "reconnect". But you shouldn't have to wait for SL to notice there's a problem to hit the "reconnect" control (normally would be a menu item). There's no point in sitting around in a "red sim" for five or ten minutes waiting for SL to go "hey, wait, I'm not getting updates". You should be able to hit that bad boy at any time.

Adding a Reconnect button would be admitting that SL requires you to re-log constantly to keep the experience smoothly working. You will never see this implemented.
Torley, do you mean a baking soda submarine perhaps? A doll that floats to the surface sounds more like "Drowning Accident Barbie" or something...

I've noticed that when I have Internet connection problems, with the connection dropping and reestablishing itself, that SL eventually loses track and bandwidth stays at zero even after the connection is reestablished. A "reconnect" button would hopefully solve this problem as well.
