I would like to set getting group IMs off, or then the IMs should be dark blue. That way I would not mix group instant messaging with my important personal messages. Otherwise I might stop reading the IMs (and I would not see my important IMs) or I would leave the group.

Ditto OBJECT instant messages. I can't tell an object llSay/Shout from an object llInstantMessage.
I'd LOVE to abuse the creators of items that use llSay instead of llInstantMessage (or llOwnerSay), but I don't know if it is a say or IM.

I would like to get all input on IM in order to create a good proposal to fix many IM issues. Please post you suggestion in that thread so I can organize all of the good suggestions into one good document and submit it.
I think your suggestion is a good one, maybe there should be priority levels for groups or friends, that change the back ground color of the message, or the tab color and options to opt out of getting messages from groups. Also an answering machine or virtual voice mail that sends an automatic IM back to friends that explains that you are busy if you are not in the mood to receive IM’s from them. This virtual voice mail could store a simple “who called” and “time stamp” so you could call back when not busy or delete it.
