We seem to have water, but water do not act like water except for the visual sense. Here's a small suggestion for changing that into something abit more useful:

Allow Swim will be a parcel/estate land permission. When set, avatars who go underwater will have their Fly button changed to Swim.

Swimming will be effectivly like flying, possibly with its own custom linden animation.

Allow Swim will be separate from Allow Fly, and will be disabled by default.

What this means:
Imagine a large region that is completly No-Fly. However, the region has large lakes and ponds.

As it stands, entering said water will make you sink like a rock, and you will have to walk your way out underwater. Adding an extra "allow swim" function in addition to Allow Fly will allow these avatars swim in 3D as long as they stay in the water. Walking out of the water will put them back on their feet with Flight disabled.

As this feature is optional, it can only add realism and amusement for those who wish to use it. Imagine this feature in use in, say, SimCast or DarkLife - or any other SL MMORPG, etc'.

I like this idea.

I'd also like to be able to have physical objects float (if properties met needed requirements) and being able to block out water with "void" prims (to make a room underwater without the darkness etc.).

you have to create these things except making waves is quite difficult i suppose but the other stuff can be done by good scripting and animations with transition animations.

I'm confident this can be done via scripting already, and I think I saw something like this on sale already (unfortunately I don't rember the name, it is some nice diving gear).

Basically, it would be an anim overrider coupled with a modified flight script.
[Edit] And add to it the simple opensource splashing script that is available for free at my shop in Elvenglen :)

hehe. No one needs to tell CS that it can be done with scripting. She is THE script kitty :)

She's just saying it'd be cool to be an environment level feature, and I'm inclined to agree. We fly in air without having to script it - why shouldn't we swim in water automatically?

I will vote for it as a land option, cool idea. Some underwater builds would not work if you were swimming, but it could be beneficial to many builds where you require your guests to swim. A land option to swim would remove the hassle of gearing up and buying animations and whatnot.

Most video "games" make the user go to a default swim while in the water, so no reason it could not be done in SL.

Just to clarify: this suggestion is not about making an animation.

This suggestion is about adding the (optional!) ability to enable "flight" while the avatar is underwater.

The idea to add a swim animation and change the button to "Swim" is just there as a fun recommendation. :)

I can think of a few more suggestions that would go quite well with this...

Allow individual plots of land to have their OWN water height setting, instead of using the global water height setting now in the estate tools. Many pools of water with different water table heights.

Allow individual plots of land the ability to texture or color the water.

Selectable boyancy / gravity setting for each plot. A reverse gravity setting would gently lift avatars to higher posistions in no-fly sims. This could be fun!

Enable / disable drowning damage for plots marked unsafe! This could even be more fun!

Selectable damage / time spent under water.

This is just my short list :)

I endorse this suggestion fully. In fact, believable water has been one of the most requested features for SL and I know I requested it a year ago when I joined. I even mentioned the swim button.. I think, if not I meant to :)

I have before mentioned this also, and although there are swimming animations I wuld like to see default AV behaviour in water to allow real swimming and some other changes to water.

LL should take a look at the swimming system inside Project Entropia which is the best MMORPG for underwater swimming yet. The old swim system in Deus Ex was fun also.... and also its possible to swim quite well in Neocron though mostly in the underground sections...

It would also be good to find a way to build underwater and to EXCLUDE water from a selected build as an option, that way underwater buildings and areas could be made with more finesse and the water would have more meaning. I would also like to see more work done on seabeds like the recent northern pipeline area with bubbles and great textures... and more general options with regard to water.
