I think SL would be benefited greatly by having the Second Life IM system work through a Jabber server set up at Linden Labs, rather then the current arrangement. This would allow many interesting things to happen for both users and scripters. For users, you could have your own IM program up and running, keeping you in touch while you are at school, and can't login to SL. For scripters, it would allow wonderful ideas, like being able to update vendors via IM, or create impromptu chatrooms. Unlike most other "let us IM out of SL" options, this one has been fully researched, and comes with quite a simple open-source solution.
So, please, let us merge SecondLife with the rest of our lives, and just make things that much richer.

I think if they were to do anything like this they should look more towards x-fire, reasons being x-fire is a game-based instant messenger which tally's up the amount of gameplay somebody has, if they were to see a wave of Second Life users it would probably dramatically increase the userbase of SL for the fact it'd be like free advertising.

According to X-Fires website, you can already use their software with secondlife. I will test this and get back to you.

However, Im all for jabber because its a nice low lag open source system.
