Like the transparency of it, texture and color. That way people who want to make really cartoony avatars could. Like for my Kirby avatar-I could upload a texture of a white circle against a transparent background, make it the shiny texture, make the transparency 0 and make it a lighter pink than the rest of the body.
People could make really good comic book characters by layering the shiny textures.

You lost me on the white circle becoming pink thingy, but the rest of what you're talking about is on the way. LL has said many times now that they are moving towards replacing the current antiquated texturing system with a more modern material shader system. The new system will behave like those in Maya and 3DSMax.
They haven't given an ETA on the new system, but my guess is it will be in 2.0. As I understand it, the biggest difference between 2.0 and 1.x will be in the rendering engine, so it would make sense to assume that changes to the texturing system will be a part of that.
