Hi, Someone may have suggested this, but the ability to create rope/string as an object would be awesome. Example....rope to stretch between handholds on a stairway...string/twine to hang lights along, etc. Even the smallest cylinder doesn't swag. Thanks, vc

Ehhh... well. Besides doing this with particles, which would be vastly less overhead, doing it at the LL and physical level is a fools errand, simply because calculating everything acting on the rope at any given point is a LOT of overhead with physics. However, a more simplistic one using an algorithm (or joints) and particles is more doable, I think. Though I'd honestly need to toy with it a bit.

Havok 2 can handle ropes natively IIRC.

Havok2 can do this, better collision detection, and ragdoll physics. Havok2, coming to second life in Q3 2034! LF

Havok2 is coming soon. "1.7 is all about Havok2" -- Andrew Linden
I took this to mean that it's their absolute #1 top priority, and there will be no more Havok1 releases, ever, period. He also told me that a lot of 1.6 work was to make the Havok2 port easier.

Havok 2 in 1.7... hmm I was hoping for Havok 2 back in 1.4 /invalid_link.html heh and now they have Havok 3. I think the Lindens should try for a Havok 3 release and drop the idea about 2.

As cool as being first-out-of-the-gate with Havok3 would be, I personally think it would be more prudent for LL to wait until Havok3 has had some debugging "shakedown" time with a few single-player titles before unleashing it on the live grid. I'll be happy enough when Havok2 rolls around.

From: someone for all we know its a long way away from being in game even thought it be nice to see it by july its not gonna happen odd... Ever play HalfLife2? it uses Havok1 and does ropes very well. (they are affected by wind, weight, explosions, etc.) so.. in conclusion to my statement.. A: Havok2 CAN do ropes B: its entirely possible to attach a rope to a ball on a cliff and attach the other end to something thats not gonna move on the cliff, knock the ball off and the rope would hold it up in HL2 (you need to DL garry's mod to be able to attach ropes) so you would be able to do such things in SL C: the main problem with putting it in SL is the streaming DL and such, in HL2 all such physics calculations are done client side, if this was the same in SL the lag would be immense upon entering a sim because all of a sudden your computer is going to have to start doing the calculations and loading up what objects are being affected and how, which could really hurt weaker computers.

Bleah, you people are goofy. LL just needs to license the Source engine from Valve and convert SL over... all future physics issues taken care of, not to mention performance on any machine (lower end machines will probably not go down, considering the current state of the game, and high end machines can only go up), plus you'll have a nerdy, obsessive mod community wanting to come to SL and build for it.

From: Anu Statosky heh and now they have Havok 3. I think the Lindens should try for a Havok 3 release and drop the idea about 2. I've seen this suggested to LL employees a few times, but the response from LL is that Havok3 doesn't really add much that is significant to SL above the features added by Havok 2. Additionally, the Havok2 code has been in development for quite some time now. If they dropped that and switched to Havok3, it'd likely put it off for quite some time. =)
