Yes, its silly, but maybe you want to talk to someone without seeing their gawdy lighting effects or "bling" gear. Or maybe its the other way around, you like the look of them but not what they're saying.
So the idea would be to, when you open your mute list, have a serries of checkboxes next to each entry. Something like this: Name: Chat [ ] IM [ ] Particle [ ] Light [ ] Sound [ ]

I like that idea, it is true, sometimes I dont want to see/hear just part of what someone is saying/wearing. Also, particle effects are quite often disruptive. Have you ever been playing Tringo or some other game and have someone wearing a poofer pop up in front of you? You cannot see anything until the particles leave, and with the lag that is at places like that, you don't see their poof anyway, you just see a bunch of grey squares. Great suggestion!

You can also turn off particles entirely if you're playing Slingo or whatever.

Didn't think about that, I already turn off hover tips and my name onscreen when playing. Thanks for the tip.

Heres the thing, I've had to explain it a dozen times at least... I don't want to turn off particle effects for the /entire world/ just because of one person. I still want to see the 3 particle/sec system thats on my avatar, and the 10/sec smoke coming from the pub off in the distance. What I don't want to see is Johnny Blingtard's blingtastic Blingsabers and rave batons that are generating something on the note of 50/sec and eating up the small 2048 particle allotment for my client such that the two lighter effects are spotty or not visible at all. (Call me weird, but I like having a frame rate above six.) Oh, and poofers should be illegal. They're silly, tasteless wastes of bandwidth. Though the new feature being added today, to include the muting of particle systems, is a step in the right direction I think it would be good to have fine control for these things.

I was reading over the list of new features and I was having a moment of de ja vu. I could SWEAR that mute on particles and a few of the others were implemented previously (unless they were to be implemented last week when things got cancelled, in which case, "doh!" .
