There is sort of a way to do this provided the object you're trying to transfer back doesn't have any no transfer objects within it's contents. Get the owner to give the creator mod rights on the object, then the creator can take it.
Big warning... If there is objects in the contents which are no transfer, they will vanish, never to be recovered again. Of course if the objects in the contents are still the same as the originals, then the creator can easily replace them after they've taken the object back.
On a side note, I've also found this handy for fixing objects which have somehow lost their contents. If an owner gives the creator mod rights, the creator can quite happily place objects back into the contents without having to take the object back first.

Wow I never even thought of that, that could be really useful. Thanks! Edit: haha, just brought to my attention, you'd still retain a copy even though it would let you give one back to the creator. >.< Edit Again: just tested it, doesn't work anyway for us.

Sorry.... that wouldn't suit what you're trying to do anyway. My bad. That'll teach me for trying to answer forum posts during my lunch break when my mind is on other things.
What I described will work, but only for transferrable objects, which contain no transfer objects. Usually the contents will make the whole object no transfer, but giving mod permissions allows the main object to be transferred but causes you to lose anything in the contents which is no transfer.
You're also right that they could keep a copy... assuming the object was copyable of course.

Just a side-note. If it is no transfer it has to be copyable. SL does not allow you to have a object no copy AND no transfer.

One possible solution.

[aside - You seem to be able to end up with objects that are effectively no-copy/no-transfer by having a no-transfer object in the contents of a no-copy object, or vice versa.]
There really needs to be some support for a verifiable return-to-creator mechanism, even if it's inconvenient.
Maybe multiple steps:
1. Request a "return authorization" folder. This could take a while (hours, more than a day, when the next RA sweep is scheduled, whatever) and maybe actually cost Lindens, because it would poll the asset server and verify that there's no no-transfer objects owned by you with the vendor as the creator anywhere in the world. After you do this, all no-transfer-objects in your inventory with that vendor as the creator would be un-rezzable until the "return authorization" had been issued and expired. If there's anything that matches in the world, the RA is would be declined and you'd be back where you started.
2. Once you have the RA, you get a folder in your inventory named "Your Name - Creator's Name" containing every no-trans object with that creator on it.
3. The creator pays you the refund, and they get that folder. They can do whatever they want with it.
This is obviously an extreme measure, but really... this should be an unusual situation.

Another reason for transferring no-trans objects back to the creator...

If you've made some mods to an object, and the creator likes them, it would be nice if the creator could get the modded object back so they could incorporate it into their future work.
This is unrelated to sales and refunds, but it's something that would be nice.
