I have been heavily changing my appearance by checking out different skins and free clothes and trying on things including underclothing and I had thought that nobody could see what I was doing while I was changing, because I appeared to them to still be wearing the outfit I had on before I began to change my appearance, and only after I have finished completely and closed out of the changing of appearance button, could they see my new look. Today I have been told that while I thought I had privacy everyone could actually see everything while i was getting changed ! I feel angry embarrassed and humiliated. Is this true? And furthermore a friend today teleported to where I was without asking and I was getting changed and not dressed and he then followed me somewhere else when I teleported away . I dont like that. I should be able agree to allow someone to teleport where over to me first they shouldnt be able to just come. .... Please everyone tell me what you think. I feel upset right now !!

1. Anyone that can see you can see you change clothes, as well as any slider changes you make in appearance mode.

Change in a private spot, or simply REPLACE clothes, don't take them off and put something else on, then you won't end up naked ;)

2. Anyone who you have added as a friend can see you on the map, and can then teleport to you at anytime they please, without your permission.

TPing to a person without notice is widely considered bad etiquette. My advice is to ask them not to do it and it they do it again, remove them from your friends list.

That being said, the ability to teleport or 'map' anyone on your friends list is a hotly discussed issue, as are all privacy concerns, and are the base issue behind a number of feature proposals. I personally am not aware of anyone having a problem with people seeing what goes on in appearance mode.

A good rule of thumb is that if you can see it, so can everyone else. The only real exceptions I know of to this are the HUDs that appear on your screen and when you preview an animation locally. If you don't want to be seen changing, you have two options. Either go to a private place to change, or rez a box around yourself. If you can't build one, I have a free changing room someone gave to me that has full permissions... I'll drop one on you in world. There are, of course, ways around both of those things as you are already learning. As long as everyone plays nice though, either will do.

As far as people teleporting to you, you pretty much consented to that when you added that person to your friends list. It's bad etiquette, for sure. But that's the way it works. Your best bet is either to say something to that friend to let them know you don't care for it and would like advance warning or remove them from your friends list.

I'd add with regard to friends teleporting in to your location... give calling cards to people that you don't necessarily want to be able to track you on the map instead of offering friendship. That way you can IM each other easily enough but that's about it. Also if you are doing something and would rather not have unwelcome drop ins of that sort, turn on your busy flag (in the world menu) which I believe still prevents use of the 'teleport to your location' while you're marked as busy.

Thanks for all the replies. I still feel upset. Thank you Madison for the offer of a changing room I would appreciate it though I was given a hollow box for the purpose earlier today by a lady I talked to about all while in sl . I feel in shock to learn I appeared undressed in front of people including my rude friend ( who may now be a former friend) . Is it possible to put a security block on a changing box to prevent anyone entering ? I wonder also if you buy a home can you prevent friends from dropping in then?

How can someone try on new skins or bras and panties without taking off clothes? Some of you may have noticed many of these skins are pretty realistic looking it is embarrassing to be seen undressed while wearing them but how else can you look at them to know if you like them ? Maybe I should buy some land and create changing rooms for those of us with no home yet, who may be looking for some privacy while changing clothes? There is also a long lag time sometimes while changing appearance where I have been stuck waiting to see how I look after making changes so I couldn get it done quickly . It just doesnt seem right to allow this embarrassing lack of privacy . Being a newbie I wish I had been told about this from the start.

Unfortunately, any sense of privacy in SL is strictly an illusion. Even if you shut yourself up in a locked room, in a skybox hundreds of feet from anything else, others can pan a camera in and watch you. They can even join you there, in spite of the locked door!

The Privacy in a pocket feature request may at least give land owners a small place where they can have actual privacy. But until that or something similar gets implemented, the only true privacy to be had in SL is to spend $1250 USD to buy a private island, plue $195 USD per month for maintenance, then hide your private sim from everyone and allow no one in the sim but yourself!

Mine is just a hollow box as well, but I'll still drop it on you tonight when I get home.

It sounds like we all have the same problems with privacy. And yes I should go to a mature area to get changed that way everyone else is undressed too or at least they dont care :). Well I used my hollow box yesterday and someone still came in and I was under the water ! A place of privacy is a good idea. If I knew how to vote for it I would. I still wish I could create a private changing room people could just put in front of them wherever they are allowed to and that allows complete privacy with no loophole anyone can find to enter . I wish .

Changing rooms

I just thought I'd mention our shop has skybox changing rooms with teleporters from the shop floor which prevent anyone else tp'ing up into them once occupied.

I don't understand the upset?

It isn't you that is "naked" it is an idealized representation in data of a humanoid figure in 3 dimensions projected into a 2 screen. It's an illusion. It's supposed to be a fun illusion.

A truly naked avatar doesn't even have a skin..

Everyone has made goofs of one kind or another when starting out, most of us just laugh it off and chalk it up as a learning experience.

Just remember the avatar is not really you. You are the being at the keyboard.

And someone mentioned indirectly how to change but didnt actually say how to do. Find the item in your inventory and drag it onto your av. You can do this with anything: shapes, skins, attachments, whatever.

Best of luck

I tried to put on my busy message today while changing appearance and a friend was still able to teleport to me so it doesnt work. Thanks for mentioning your changing room Cj what is the name of your store? Can friends teleport in there? I know its an avatar and not really me but you have to realize it is still a representative of me here in SL and I was still naked as such .It was embarrassing also I went into a couple of places that sell skins that actually had signs meant for the men to keep out or not to bother the women while they are trying them on , so there is something to all this apparently, the store owners realize it too. And yes I have to just laugh it off I will try .
