I would really like to be able to import other formats than the .tga/.jpg. For example, .png files which allows a good mastering of transparency without being heavy files. Anyone else would like this ?

Yes, and we already had a topic about this that we let die. Too bad really. There are issues with PNG transparency in Windows XP, but otherwise it shouldn't be a hassle.

I didn't know about the thread, i searched with .png without finding a message, sorry.
Issues in windows XP ? I work with it fine... Which ones please ? If not .png, could it be possible to find an image format accepting real transparency, not only alpha channel, to be easier to use ? .psd maybe ? I really think that .tga is not the best... ![]() |

tga is a lossless raw format.
png is good. The only reason png not work so well on XP is because of failing in MS's PNG parser. LL could use LGPL PNG library. _____________________

I've suggested it before, too.
You might check the voting thing to see if it exists there. _____________________

I tried a search there too... didn't find anything. Does someone by any chance have seen such vote ?

I remember the day I learned Firefox handles PNG more fluently than Internet Explorer. Given upcoming Mozilla integration in SL, doesn't that make PNG a more natural fit?

Should we then submit a request for .png support in the vote section ?

Multi-Prop Frustration
02-12-2007 22:47
Sure the thread's over a year old, but it hardly feels like necroposting; it's still a proposal that keeps coming up, just usually without a thread of its own.
Prop. 452, Prop. 755, Prop. 1126, Prop. 1427 and just now Prop. 2846 all support this development for a total of 320 votes / 112 voters. All are identical except for #1427 (44/23, proposes .gif as well.) Perhaps it's not as important as some proposals, and that's why I currently only have one vote of mine on it (placed on the highly-voted #452, but I don't know whether to move it to the one that links here). It'd sure be nice though if someday someone could say a few words about how easy this may or may not be to add in to the workings of SL. Or for that matter, why it would or wouldn't be worth the effort. |
