The new upcoming 'offline in find' mode is going to help alot. But I think people will still expect an instant reply when they see that you're online after IM'ing you.
IM mode can be such a pain.
It seems IM mode has been tailored for Linden Lab (liason) employees who naturally spend most of their time staring into an IM window while dealing with customer related issues. But some of us are here to have fun and don't really want to have to respond to IM's all day long.
I have an instant messenger program for when I want to do nothing but chat.
Or to put it in Linden Lab speak - IM mode doesn't scale!.
