My suggestion is to enhance the abilities when someone gives you "modify rights" in the friends list. It has been said that one has to be careful with this, as they can "modify the object as if they were you". But this is not truly the case. For example I can't adjust the modify/copy/trans flags on a object someone else owns and has created even if they give me modify rights (which if they can.....shouldn't I be able to?). Also I can't view a script in a object that they own, even though I USE to do this before the problem with the assets server a few weeks back.
In short I should be able to "really" be able to modify a object as if I were them. This limited modify rights creates problems for my partner and I. And although there are ways around it (basically we have to give copies to each other then rez it in world before one can read the others work in the contents....even notecards!). Also I have noticed that I can't lock or unlock a object even if I have modify rights.
Also shouldn't one be able to link objects that are owned by someone else if they have modify rights? As it is now one person has to set everything to sell and the other buy them before they can be linked. While this does work it is a hindrance. Sure you can "take" the object then rez it again, however after you spend a long time getting something in the precise position, you don't want to do it all over again just to link it. Hence the sell method as this will cause the object to stay in place.
I know that some probably like the limited modify rights, but if someone having your "full" modify rights is a problem, you shouldn't give it to them in the first place. That is a choice you make, and it should only be done after you know the person very well for some time. And this is the warning that is given when modify rights are explained.

One problem I see in light of the recent grid attacks is anyone who has modify rights could use someones elses objects and scripts to crash sims etc and it wouldn't be traceable..
A griefer could hire someone to build and ask for modify rights to edit a few parts of the build etc..

poor group buliding tools

anyone who has tried to build collaboratively may be aware of this. When you grant someone the right to modify, it is very limited. It would be nice to give much more flexible amounts of edit rights AND be able to take those rights back. For example. If you are building with someone and they make a copy of a your wall, you can end up with a wall that only the second builder can edit. Also at issue is ending up with a building filled with mixed permissions. Is there a good way to have collaborative building followed by a method to give partial or total rights to the one or none (new owner) the rights? I realize selling may do this but this becomes more and more complex with bigger and harder to link objects. Oh and lets fix texture permissions while we are at it

It would seem there would have to be some record of who has modify rights to an objects.
The reminds me of the old demand for a record of "last modified by".

Zapoteth, I understand what you are saying, however as it is now you can do just as you said.....taking someone elses work and put a "greifer script" in it. Granted the script may not have the original builders name on it but still possible.
But I really doubt that someone would give a greifer modify rights. Modify rights are to be granted only to someone you know very well. Yes I am sure that people have been fooled, but I tend to think that there are more to be gained than loose.
And Suezanne, I agree a "last modifed by" would elimate the possible greifer problem that Zapoteh brought up. But do people really give out their modify rights to people they don't really know well? I guess so or this wouldn't be a issue.
