There should be in fact a 'home space' or a small on-disk environment where one can build stuff and take it out a 'door' when connected.
Take this thought further- I can easily envision a room or a workshop where the startup/login screen is, with avatar fully loaded and all, before one logs in. Logging in itself would then be a simple matter of walking out a door (which can be shown 'locked' when you're offline,) into the SL universe. As and when a connection is available.
Now, having an environment where the user could experiment offline would help him/her get used to the SL universe that much better, wouldn't it? A 'virtual home room' could be customized with a large number of widgets (some things that come to mind are a web/file browser and a dressing room, for instance) and could even at some later stage take over the primary interface of the OS. I have always believed that a 3-D virtual interface like SL's would be far more intuitive than any existing 2-D GUI. Apart from being customizable to a level that brings VR right to the user, and makes it easier for even laypersons to interact with their machine seamlessly and comfortably.
Comments, anyone?

You'll still need to type in a username and password, and this will add another unnecessary step to the login process if you, say, crash, or need to relog.

That could be an interesting idea. I do not sure about its functionality and, most important, security though ;p
Will it lead to more way of hacking No Copy or No Trans stuffs?

It could work!

I'm sure there is a way of optimise the functionality. The login and password would be a one-time process either way, wouldn't it? Your avatar starts life in a small 10 by 10 metre space, which you can use your inventory to customize to your heart's content. Logging into the internet/SL domain would be after you're logged in as a user and if the net connection is available.
I'm a relatively new user here, but regarding no copy/no trans, I'm sure there could be similar restrictions placed in the login/home space. For instance, non-copiable items could just as easily be used for one's personal environment, with the same restrictions as they would in SL.
The problems I can see in this would be security related, and the fact that it could end up eating a lot of storage space. Don't know too much about this, but I'm fully open for it being developed as an alternative OS or Windows GUI.

Well, it couldn't be on your own system...

The "login environment" couldn't be on a system under your contrrol if it's going to have SL cntent in it, but LL could set up sim-in-a-box systems around the Internet (kind of like an Akamaized SL) to run mini-sims for logging in. It would definitely move things closer to the "Snow Crash" vision.
