Ive just spent all night jumping up and down trying to lay out walls and floors it would be so mmuch easier if you could snap to a corner of a prim and join it to another prims smap point

Check out the Ivory Tower Library of Primitives. There's a number of tools in SL that can be used to get prims lined up correctly, and they explain most of them there.

"Snap to object" is extremely handy in other drawing programs and would be an excellent feature for SL. I agree wholeheartedly. Please subit this as a votable feature; I'll add my vote for sure.

Note that such a feature often causes problems too; it's a nontrivial issue when there are multiple objects, especially in 3D. Nonetheless, it's worth serious consideration.

There's supposed to be a mechanism to use a specific prim as the basis for grid snap and alignment. I forget the details, but I believe it's described in the Ivory Tower Library.

Yes, Snap can be dangerous. Even with the improved snap that doesn't trigger until you drag the pointer over the "snap lines" I find situations where an object gets snapped to "zero size" when I wasn't expecting it. But it's much better than in the old days when you had to turn it off and on all the time.
