So, the clouds are made of particles, but the particle itself is visibly larger than 4mx4m. I'm sure it's been suggested before and I can't find it, but is there a reason why we can't be allowed to make particle scripts that generate larger particles?

What would you use it for?
I know that I've seen some large particles (and used in massive number) and been rather annoyed. I don't think I want to see LARGER particles. |

What would you use it for? I know that I've seen some large particles (and used in massive number) and been rather annoyed. I don't think I want to see LARGER particles. I recently played around with particles a little more making magic-spell effects, and many times wished I could have made the particles bigger. People would also be able to make their own cloud-like, mist-like, ect. particles - as is you can make pretty cool clouds/effects with particles but you see a a fair amount of texture repetition and have to use more particles than if you were able to use fewer, bigger ones. I have NPC's right now that are like a cardboard standup - it's only one prim and I can change/animate the texture to make the NPC animated as you talk to them. I'd love to remake these using particles, but they'd all have to be short. ![]() > Edit > No, I'm dense, 4m isn't too short, I might be able to try this idea out again afterall. 8D Particles are the only way to make a billboard texture that always faces the client, is always drawn flat facing you as you view it. Bedazzle's particle foilage/flower generator and other things would be nicer with higher particle sizes too. _____________________

I can see uses for them, although I can just see too many ways it would be abused or just annoying (I mean, I've seen people TP in with a 100+ particles at 1mx1m smoke effect).
And if they have a max size of 4m, that's 12 feet. What kind of NPC do you have that's over twice the hight of a human being? |

Particles used to be 10x10m max. LL crippled it sometimes around 1.5 or 1.6 because of griefing or something

10m prims...5m particles. wtf!
04-05-2006 10:05
The current limitation is 5m for a particle. I agree that this limit is far too small. Here is an example.
I have a sim I am working on, in one section of the sim I have buildings that are smoking rubble, at the base particles look fine however at the further reaches of the effect the individual sprites become clearly recognisable ruining the effect. So in order to compensate for this limitation I have to duplicate the effect and move it halfway up to make sure things are covered, this requires far more particles than it should, thus making it slower and more of a drag on the client because of the limitation. This is not the only instance. Another example would be a single particle effect of a flare that expands out from the body, in this instance 5m actually only equals 2.5m from the side of the body or object, so today people create effects with a gazillion particles that could be done with one....one particle. No doubt there is always a potential for griefing, however the number of griefers to normal users is incredibly small, I do not see why we should be limited because of an annoying minority. Nor does the particle size limitation stop them from griefing with particles (not that many of them use particles to grief in the first place). The following effects become difficult to create due to this limitation. Large scale smoke stacks Large scale steam stacks Larger clouds/fog effects Nebula etc, etc, etc. All of these are done in world now, however they require more particles than they should because of this limit. A particle effect becomes more effecient the more controls an effects artist is given, not less. _____________________

Static Particles
04-05-2006 21:22
I would like to see static particles, such that the things that generate grass and scrub brush from particles could just put the particle out and have it sit there. Prefereably a static array of particles.
Those moving flickering grass particle things are a nice try but they are always with the moving and the flickering, it is kind of annoying. _____________________
