I want to listen to music (my own music) even when I am away from home - like having my MP3 player with me on the street or at the gym.

Hm, I would think to do this by muting SL audio streams and then playing in Winamp. Alain, does this not suit your needs?

I actually use WinAmp and SL at the same time ALL the time. Works great.

There are also services like Live365.com that store your MP3's and stream them to the web - so you don't have to be on your own computer to listen to your music.
IMHO, Let SL concentrate on providing us with SL-type experiences. There are plenty of other jukebox-type programs out there that do a far better job of music management than SL can.
Take care,
