How about adding an 'wearable' flag to objects? Objects without this flag would have a different icon in inventory, and if you tried to wear them or attach them to your av, the attachment/wearing would fail with a helpful error message like "You cannot wear this item, it is of the wrong type". Objects would have this flag by default, and editing the object would make you able to turn it on/off.
Benefits : 1) Being able to tell which items were meant to be worn, and which items were not, in your inventory. Thus, no more problems about "should I drag this object onto the ground, or onto my av?" 2) Not more ending up with a house on your head if you accidentally drag something onto your av. This DOES happen. For example, if you wear large prim wings as I sometimes do, occasionally I forget where the invisible parts of the wings are and end up with something on my head.... because I've forgotten that I have a large invisible wing between my camera and the point I was trying to drop an object at.
It'd make SL far easier to use for newbies, and would be in line with the current upgrades to inventory of allowing people to find things more easily. Oh, and it'd stop people messing up their avs accidentally due to invisible attachments (for example, wings, shields, etc).

And a button to open up more details in inventory, with them editable when that makes sense... Object properties: +------------------------ | name [ ... ] | description [ ... ] | (v) More details... | default attachment point [ ... ] | attachment rotation X[ ] Y[ ] Z[ ] | attachment position X[ ] Y[ ] Z[ ] | ... | (v) Content summary... | 23 prims | 101 objects in contents | 14 active scripts | ...

But what about people who enjoy wearing houses on their heads?
Actually though it would be easier if when we create something out of prims, there is a box in edit that could be checked or not that states the item is supposed to be worn.

Yes! I would like for objects to state the default attachment point, because when trying things on that I want to wear with avs, I don't want to mess up its default point, but I also don't want it to take off my prim hair or whatever else I have on.

I learned wearing stuff on your head is a practical way of showing someone something in a no-build area.
The items are usually large or ridiculous to wear anyway, and make avatar navigation difficult so people are not likely to keep those things worn for long.

Unwearable Warnings
06-14-2006 10:29
- EXISTING objects should default to Wearable, but NEW objects should default to unwearable.
- There should be a button or check in the dialog allowin` the resident to say "Ah know, but let me wear it anyway", and possibly one to say "Well, it SHOULD be wearable! Make it so!"
- Said dialog would be a good place ta edit attach-points, too.
While Ah`m thinkin` of it, it`d be nice if there were a flag to allow things like over-size wings ta be considered NOT part of the avitar for the purposes of drag-and-drop of inventory items, especially when droppin` on transparent areas. Toodle-oo!

I'd say to "click though" any transparency of any object that is worn. My wings get in the way of sitting on chairs too. And while I can easily avoid the transparten parts that are transparent because of the TEXTURE, it's a bit more difficult to figure out where my extended-wings prims are.

I would say make a different icon, BUT still allow them to be worn, just have the unwearable as a recommendation so people know ahead of time.
