In world AV reaction on crash

Some times when SL crashes it can be annoying. Some times it can inspire. Heres my crash inspired idea.
Have you ever been talking to someone when they suddenly poof and you think to yourself "How rude. They just left without answering my very important question." only to have them reapear a minute later and have to say "sorry. i crashed"? Why not add a feature to make your crashes more fun for every one around you? :D This could be achieved by having the inworld AV react when the client it represents crashes. Maybe have a special default crash animation that makes the AV melt into the ground and a wizard of oz like sound that screams "IM MELTING!!! IM MELTING!!!" and maybe have a message appear in the chat saying "Joe Somebody has crashed and burned." that would let every one near the person who crashes know that, no their not rude, they crashed.

I think something like this would make the process of working out the bugs in SL a little more fun and less frustrating for everyone.

Sure. As long as it's fully customisable, since mine would undoubtedly headbutt a wall repeatedly and scream 'for f*cks f*cking sake thats only the f*cking 20th f*cking crash today. But there's no point in f*cking reporting it cuz the Lindens don't f*cking give a f*cking f*ck. I'm off to play a game that works. Seeya'

Sounds great to me =)

Add a drop-down list to preferences "Play gesture on crash: [ ]"

Great idea! Both fun and practical. :D

This sounds ripe with potential -- maybe even some special visual effects like having your av stripped apart, scanline by scanline... if not a literal melting puddle morph. Or you know how Star Wars holograms are? Maybe your signal could have these flickery lines waver across, or go all staticky in a fade-out.

This would go hand-in-hand with the smooth fade-in transition, you could similarly have an "entrance" anim instead of poofing in so abruptly and morphing from your Ruthian origins. Hee.

I'm not sure how you'd even work this?

I mean, I crash every single time I touch an object to edit it. But I don't 'go offline'. I still show online to anyone also online, and on the 'friends online' thingy. And how is it going to know when someone has actually crashed, versus having just logged out?

making it work wouldnt be hard since the server probably already detects when someone disconnects without pushing the exit button. i know little about programing but i bet this is something that could be implemented in about a day if not a couple of hours or less.

A shame, then, that if LL can't stop me crashing several dozen times a day, that they dont at least show me as offline when I do, if it's so easily detectable, since I don't get offline IM's (because the system doesnt know I'm offline) and people think I'm just being plain rude not talking to them when I'm clearly 'online'. My avie has probably logged 20 odd hours in SL this weekend, though I've actually only been on for a couple of hours total since 1.6 because SL is totally unusable.

Actually Panther, I don't think it would be quite that simple. SL uses UDP for communications, and I have seen SL sims send data to my PC long after the SL client has crashed, indicating that they don't have any idea at all that I am gone. Becuase UDP is connection-less, there isn't any built in error correction (the ack's that TCP sends) to determine if the target (client) is still listening and recieving data. What I think happens now is that if the sims and/or user server doesn't recieve any traffic from the client for a specified time, your av is removed from the grid. This is the *poof* that occurrs a few minutes after somebody crashes. While they could lower that timeout window, it could potentially mess up users with slower connections, or users in high lag areas of the grid. While I think the idea is funny, I don't think it would work out very well with the given communications system being used by SL. Just some thoughts....

actually even with the time out window it would still work and this isn't a vital feature I am suggesting. its just something i thought would lighten things up when people crash, at least for the other people. I don't know how the person crashing will feel about it. everybody loves a good laugh. i just think this feature would provide a good opportunity for laughs in sl especially after major releases when bugs are at their peak.

YES! lol

Also I have had times where I ended up talking to a ghost for a half hour only to find out they teleported or crashed. Ghosts need attention too :P

I'd like to see someone drop dead as if they' had their plug pulled matrix-style.

But.... the SIM is currently too dumb to realize you're offline. Is a 'connection status' packet every few seconds that much trouble?
