todays sandboxes are being flooded with users that lag the sim, abuse it, or generally take up more space then they should. Second Life should add an offline feature that allows a player to create objects and build in an offline setting. They can then import the items into the online second life. This shouldn't be too hard and it would be a great idea for those who wish to build while on the go our away from the internet. Obviously certain charges would apply for textures etc when you upload the content or import it into the real second life. I think it would be an amazing feature added to Second Life by Linden Lab.

That would be awesome, trying to build with lag is so frustrating. What do you think the chances of it actually happening are?

You may be fascinated in seeing the fruit that Jeffrey Gomez has recently alpha-released, an offline builder.

I think he means a personal local sandbox wich will never happen because it'd require a multipul core/cpu setup and a min 2 gigs of ram to run a local server and second life at the same time. The requirements are too steep to make something like that.
Until SL is capable of streaming mesh data importing stuff from other 3d modelers is pretty mute. |

it actually wouldn't have that big of a requirement, I guess you don't see the bigger picture. If you were to run a simulated server with only the objects you create, it wouldn't be too hard on your computer. You can create and edit items in other 3d games on your local computer with out being online and then you can import them into the online version.

it actually wouldn't have that big of a requirement Indeed. Second Life may be bloated, but I have still managed to run 3 instances (all logged in with different accounts) at the same time. And all of them running reasonably well based on how bad the sim lag was. Mind, I didn't keep it up for long. |
