llSetLinkTexture(integer linknumber, key uuid, integer face)

This would make it possible for something like XyText to use a lot fewer scripts =)

Additionally, I've been told that XyText uses 96 different characters, which comes out to 9,216 character combinations.

If LL were to put each of these character combinations into the asset server as 9,216 textures and then provide a function to reference the UUID for each of them, that might be a simple temporary solution to hold us over until proper text-on-surface can be implemented.

ie:
key llGetTextureLetterPair(string letterpair)
or even better:
list llGetLetterTextures(string text)

If this were possible, a XyText type board could be reduced to only a couple scripts and very small letter textures which should download faster and use less memory.

XyText has a lot of character combinations per texture you know... they're not 9216 textures, it's more like 20 times less than that.

i fully support kex's suggestion.

I do not support the other commands listed above as they are just a bandaid for a puncture wound.

oh and XyText uses 66 textures. Another 3 for the chart script. Finaly 1 more texture for the prim setup. Bringing the count to 70.
