Private Group Memberships

This seems like a simple feature, but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could set your Group Memberships to be "private"
in your profile? (And above your avatar if said group is the current active group)

Maybe you have a 25 year-old buddy from work in SL, and you don't want him/her to know you're a member of "A**-Lovers" group. (Which could cause you grief in RL)

With the privacy activated, only other members of that group would see the group name over your head, or in your profile.

It seems silly, but this tiny feature could save some of us from having to create Alts over something so simple.

Groups that are set not to show up in the group find, do not show up on profiles.

Your post gives me the willies. Not to mention said 12 year old should be on the teen grid.

1) The option to "hide" from group list is only available to the creator of the group, to members this option is greyed-out

2) Why should it give you the willies? We all know that A) free sexual expression is a huge part of SL, and B) Minors are ALL over the adult grid. This is about protecting them AND our privacy.

Not even, the 12-year-old isn't allowed on the TG either, it's 13-17 year olds.

Hell, you know any 12-year-olds on the main grid, you report them. I don't know what you think you're doing.

You will give people the wrong idea if you talk about sex and 12 year olds in the same paragraph, let alone the same sentance.

By the way, I just checked, and even groups that DON'T list their members, will STILL show up in your profiles.

The "minors" thing was conjecture based on my observation in the world ("PG" areas means "Parental Guidance" right? Parent of who? A minor, probably.) Also, the family theme parks and such.

But that's beside the point.

What if you don't want your 25-year-old buddy from work, who also plays SL, to know you're in the BDSM club?

It would just seem so simple to have a check box on your OWN settings page for each group that would say "keep my membership to this group private."

How is this a bad thing?

EDIT: Modified original post, but it still seems relevant

It's a reasonable request.
In the mean time get an alt account :P

It is a reasonable request, seems to go hand-in-hand with doing away with the perfectly silly 15-group limit.

You see hidden groups in your profile, but people not in the group dont see it there. As far as the titles go, you dont have to wear the group active.

I like how it works now, a completely hidden group could be an issue. Especially with group owned land, everyone should be able to see what group owns land and who the officers of that group are.

Loki, i just checked in-game in a window

I saw a private group listing, and the member list was BLANK (private)

I searched for a resident who I know is in that group, and
their membership to that group shows up in their profile.

I am not a member of this group, so I know that has no bearing on it.

Loki just said that people who aren't in the group won't see it listed in your profile. Since YOU ARE IN THAT GROUP you do see it listed on your fellow groupmember's profile.

Look me up and see if you see me in the group, Lochwood.

But I'm NOT in the group! I just stated that in the last post. :P

i'll lay it out again

1) The group's member list was private (blank)
2) I am NOT a member of the group
3) I search for a resident who IS a member of the group
4) The group appeared in their profile

Not to mention, this still doesn't address the fact that the private status can only be set by the group's creator and not on an individual basis by its members.

I really don't want to create an Alt. I play myself in SL, i just want the same privacy afforded in RL. In RL, you might be a member of the ACLU, the NRA, or even the KKK, but you're not forced to wear your membership card on your sleeve. In SL, you are.
