Let's take advantage of v1.1, make Olive an island sim!

With v1.1, we will get teleportation to anywhere in world for free. So my suggestion is, let's PLEASE make the Olive sandbox a sim that is not connected to anything!!! I have a few good reasons for this. 1: I really feel sorry about my experiments when there are people living 100 meters away from my workshop. They really don't deserve the stress they get from us Olive junkies. 2: Teleportation is free, so unlike the $$$ cost it would entail us now, the teleport to olive in v1.1 would be free and nobody would be bothered by people working in the sim (except for the other people working in the sim). 3: Has anyone been on an empty island sim before? It's the least laggy experience in the entire game!!! It would be extremely sandbox-like of Olive if it could be so not-laggy! And I believe making it an island is definitely going to help with this. Either reply with "yay", "nay" and a reason, or a Linden can reply with "okay".

yay. It would be peaceful for those currently neighboring Olive and stray items would not be able to reach other sims.

I'm of two feelings.
Feeling one: First off, I moved on the Olive edge of Slate on purpose. I don't mind the noise, the chaos, nor the inadvertant flung object, and love being able to flit between the two. I like bordering Olive and would miss it if it were gone.
Feeling two: those who live in adjoining sims who don't share my outlook deserve consideration too. And it would be nice to worry less about offending everyone I'm when having Charlie-Omega-level fun in Olive.
I guess feeling two wins out. A standalone Olive makes sense.

I originally moved to Teal to be close to the sandbox. But, I must admit, I dont spend a lot of time up there these days. I see Olive as a RL commercial airport. People in Slate and Rose are in the flight path. You can get used to being there or move. (Please no flaming, not approving current behavior, just comparing a RL scenerio.) I used to live in a flight path and now I live near Olive, go figure I really hate to see Olive move to an isolated island, it will not be randomly visited and some of the spectatular builds will never be seen. It is always cool to see what is there, since its never the same everyday. But, its probably best for the world as we know it to make it an isolated teleport only destination.

I also enjoy seeing what's going on in Olive when I'm traveling between Gray and Slate. I tend to go that way instead of around through Teal, because there's always something new and interesting to see. Making Olive into a crater helped greatly with the problem of physical objects escaping the sim. If any further change is to be made, I'd advocate fixing the default collision sound so it only travels 30m or so, like other sounds. I think the analogy of Olive being like an airport is apt. It is very like that. It's exciting and fun to see things flying through the air, but not so much if they crash into your neighborhood, or make loud noises when you're trying to sleep.

Agree with Ananda. I like being able to swing through Olive on my regular rounds of the northern sims to see what's up. (although lately I seem to be inworld when none of the crazy builders are on a tear in Olive ) I'd be very much agin' making it teleport-only. I'm one of those people who only teleports in an emergency, and 99% of the regular teleports that I make are to my home. Making Olive teleport-only would mean that I'd practically never bother visiting, free or no free. However, the collision sound change should be implemented at the next available opportunity. This would cut down on a lot of the complaints. I'm a little surprised it *hasn't* been implemented before, honestly.

Yeah this really is quite the predicament here...
I guess if there was some sort of way to automatically place scripts on objects in the sim where they would go back into your inventory upon leaving the sim AND they had collision sounds off (with, yes, the ability to script them back ON, incase you wanted to do somthing that might be better with the sounds) then that would be a cool thing to do.
I just don't think that LL has the technology to do it (yet)...

Wow I posted to things like this to other threads supporting the seporation of Olive from the grid, but ya guys here make a good point on both sides.
Maybe with my idea of multiple sandbox sims we could have alayout that the wildest crazy sandbox siom is in say the middle of more tame sandbox sims (surrounded by tame ones).
Also like I posted a while back about why is the typing animation sound so loud and carries so far, Why should the standard collision carry so far?
I said that if I can't see the chat why should I hear the typiing?
Very similiar to Olive, if we aren't in that sim, why should the sound carry outward?
I think instead of seporating the sim we could do the multiple thing, plus maybe a sound damping at sim edge, hard coded into the sim where no sounds leave that sim. Also have it where objects scripted or not can't leave the sim.
I do script my objects to die at edge, but the problem with that is, objects deleted via script don't go to the lost and found or the trash. They are just gone.
Maybe allow script killed objects to land themself into your trash, or just have it so objects in the sim bounce back into the sim. Much like in v1.1 where if you can go into the property you are bounced back a touch.
But yes something in some short order needs to be done so that us "Charlie Omega" level sandbox loving, experimenters (love that plug Coyote hehe) can less offensive to others, even if we are inadvertantly offensive.

Short of the money it would cost to set up, I'd like to see a new sandbox sim, called "the sandbox" that is a teleport-to only sim where really big, or just flat out obnoxious experiments can be worked on. That would then free Olive up to be more of a testing/building ground from non-sim-crashing non-complaint-creating projects.
Still though, I can't really justify the cost of the extra server just for the minority. So I guess we're back where we started...

I would like to see the Olive as an island.
Why not do this:
Make it an island. Rename it to Sandbox.
Add a 'teleport to sandbox' menu item under or near, 'teleport home'.
And make it free, just like teleport home.
That way, I dont have to go find a telehub just to get there (1.1), or waste money teleporting normally (current).
I feel this reduces the loss of 'casual sandbox spectators' that would incur by just moving it and forcing ppl to go find a telehub, then teleport to it.
It will be readily accessible in case anyone gets the urge to go check out whats happening.

I don't agree with making changes to the current world. If more users sign up and cause a demand for another sandbox, then it wouldn't be so bad to add another Sandbox somewhere that is secluded. But then again, I'm not sure if I like the idea of having a non-seamless world. I like being able to walk, fly, or ride my way to anywhere. It's probably the reason why I don't visit Evie's island after it's first announcement. By having the sandbox teleport only IMO would steer users away from a sense of being in an online world.
