One of our authors for the magazine I co-publish...Ok this is a little bit of a plug :0 but... this author wrote a very interesting article speculating what Secondlife might be like in the future. It's long but an interesting read. He talks about possible features that future versions of SecondLife my have, and well read it and see what you think. It gets into the following areas... immortal software... the idea that Linden Labs may in the future let you record your Second Life for your ancestors to watch and enjoy. - real-time avatar to avatar language translation - Large super high-definition displays (Wall size) - Porting the SL client to Xbox and Playstation III - Ebay integration and most ironically the thing most likely to happen soon, speaking to each other using the computer microphone in SL as opposed to CHAT... Anyway, given the topic of this board I thought you might like to know... We have had a most interesting response to this article as it deals with the future of SL and virtual reality. You can check it out at: http://www.slatenight.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=89Peace out brothers and sisters

From: Dell Wilberg and most ironically the thing most likely to happen soon, speaking to each other using the computer microphone in SL as opposed to CHAT... So, being a dragon I'd sound like a young male Philadelphian? WTF? And that male troll over there sounds like a British woman? Huh?

No offense, but with the exception of client-to-client translation, none of these ideas are particularly interesting or exciting.
Voice chat is actually a bad idea as for many it will break the continuity of the game, plus introduce a whole new level of lag.

If one can do real time translation, if that means translation of voice from one language to another, changing the tonal qualities of the voice to whatever one wants shouldn't be a problem. So your big dragon av could have a voice that sounds like Sean Connery, just like real dragons do.

Unfortunately we're a long way from being able to do this even vaguely realistically... but voice chat is already here in other games. Do you have a proposal for "disabling 'turn avatar around when you go into appearance editor", BTW? I'll vote for it!

Argent, I've noticed as i play that if your camera is in front of the character when you select "appearance" it uses the back of the character in all of the little preveiw windows instead of the front, So while it doesn't stop the character from turning around, it lets you get different angles to edit your character from, Is that what you meant?

So your big dragon av could have a voice that sounds like Sean Connery, just like real dragons do. Aside from the fact that I've never met a RL dragon that sounded like Sean Connery, I think you are on to something. I think you are suggesting a sound modulator in the client that would do some tricks like changing the pitch and timbre of the voice without messing up the speed, adding reverb, attack changes, sound effects triggered on your speech, etc. Then part of SL play would be using those voice scripts, plus your own fake (hopefully) dragon accent to present a consistant audio persona. Staying in character would be one of the challenges, unless you actually are a dragon in RL and also play one in SL. BTW, this would be a whole new saleable scripting arena for products analogus to the current animations offered for sale. And they wouldn't add a lot of lag since it would be all client side. Voice bandwidth is pretty small ~4-5K. Of course, all our non-SL playing spouses would be even more convinced that we'd all gone round the bend when they heard us.
