MAME is an arcade emulator.
http://www.mame.net/ I doubt we'll see anything like that built into SL, nor am I sure of its need. |

arcade in SL

Check out my arcade on Cameo Island. The games are playable. Some use MAME, some use FLASH or JAVA. The games pop up in a web browser, since we don't have HTML on a prim yet.

Hell yeah, and why don't we get OpenOffice built in as well?
No! What the hell are you thinking? You want MAME, launch MAME yourself! It's got nothing to do with SL! |

flash and shockwave

We can already view FLASH and SHOCKWAVE files on prims, using Quick Time. Unfortunately, we can't interact with the movies yet, just watch em.
Way to argue for less functionality, btw. _____________________

You have any idea how complicated Director (Shockwave) plugins are? It was meant for CD ROM movies, not the web (only about 30% of internet uses have any version of the Shockwave plugin, vs. 80% with Flash). My professor described it as, "If Flash is a race car, then Director is an 18 wheel semi-truck."
SL is already a mushroom patch of a program with no streamlining visable--it's a bandwith hog, a resource hog, unstable, and laggy. We might want Shocked media someday but as it is, SL can pretty much accomplish whatever you might want to do with Director. And in 3D. |

Instead of adding "HTML on a prim" or "mame on a prim"...
How about "Display external program on a prim" and let you specify what those programs are. That way you can use small and lightweight programs if they'll do what you need. CODE

I was thinking more like, "I'll put Quake 3 on a prim!"
Ok, who renders it? |

lol
Won't it be fun playing game console on a prim box in SL? And use a HUD-pad as a joystick Maybe LL should contact with MS and Nintendo for integration of GameCube, PS3, and Wii into SL as well! See, SL's prim can already support 3d joystick! ![]() _____________________

....and what on which machine renders that program on that prim? It's just the same as with media textures, which are basically projections of a local quicktime instance onto a prim. The application would be run on your local computer, and instead of running in a window its output would be intercepted by SL and displayed to you on a prim surface, as if SL was your window manager. This is trivial in Linux, and easy in Mac OS X. It's certainly possible in Windows, VNC and Citrix clients do it (and some Citrix clients in the past have even done it on a window-by-window basis). |
