It would be nice if we had text-to-speech for scripts (like microsoft agent). Objects would then be able to speak, instead of just printing text on the screen.

Hmm, I believe this would be no more intense than text, since the TTS engine would speak it in real time. objects further away could be played fainter...

I LOVE this idea!

It would be nice if someone visited my house and then suddenly a voice from behind would say: "You are trespassing. DIE HUMAN!".

This really isn't that bad of an idea...

Just thinking about it, this could be done with what resources we have now...beit cumbersome but not totally impossable :-)

Chris Omega put some voices on his elevator that were generated by some TTS software...

Yes, it could be done (if an Amiga from the 1980's can, a modern computer can squeeze the cpu cycles to do it... although the Amiga was not handycapped with Windows). However, I am not quite sure if I see huge application for it besides the one week "cool" factor. But hey, it won't hurt anything either and I am all up for more capabilities, even ones without huge actual application.

Still would rather see midi/mod support, or heck, even just being able to play a sample at different pitches.

The problem of using the operating system's proprietary text-to-speach software is that, because SL will be crossplatform, it will kind of 'not' like being ported. (which is bad)

In an odd twist of syncronicity, I was listening to Radiohead's album 'OK Computer' while I was reading this thread, and it was playing the track with the computer speech droning on and on.

Initial reaction was negative because I hate that track lol, but on thinking about it, it could be a cool feature.

One reason to not implement this would be the confusing function names, I mean we would have
llSay and llReallySay

This could be our version of voice chat. Create an object which listens to the owner and then tts's it! Could be interesting :)

Oh, Wednesday, what's wrong with llSayTTS?

I love this idea. I used to be in a VRML world called Cybertown, they had the option to have the chat read to you, would be great while scripting or otherwise distracted with IMs
