I've come to realise, we in Second Life have become a community. And as a community we like to stay in touch even when we're outside of SL. Look at us in these forums, we're in here checking in all day, replying to posts, getting involved, having our say...

So if there's a bunch of us around, and we want to be in touch with the SL community, what about a Second Life chatroom somewhere? We could go there knowing other SL people may be hanging out there, and we could just chat and stuff, amongst other SL citizens.

Speak up everyone, what do you think? :D

===

Hold the phone, it exists already !!!

The channel is #secondlife, and is located on irc.efnet.net

Gee, thats what I always thought SL is --- not a game, not a metaverse, but an over glorified chat room.

There is the #secondlife IRC channel on efnet.org that has been serving this purpose for a long time and is quite active. I don't think that's a wheel that needs to be reinvented.

This is the obligatory notice that a secondlife IRC channel exists on EFnet (IRC stands for internet relay chat, and essentially is just that.) -

The channel is #secondlife, and is located on irc.efnet.net

You can use a few ways to connect; the best method generally is downloading a client onto your computer, there are a few availible, I've listed them below. Another popular option is to connect via the web. You can use http://chat.efnet.org to connect in from a webbrowser.

Popular IRC clients:
XChat - www.xchat.org (Windows, Mac & Linux)
mIRC - www.mirc.co.uk (Windows)

You can also use GAIM or Trillian to connect in.

There's usually about 50 or so people at any one time (downtime tends to attract a few more) , including a few resident lindens.

Hey I'm not up for struggling hard to reinvent the wheel. It already exists? Well I'll go there right now then :) Thanks :D

One more time from my broken-record campaign: Second Life should better integrate standards of IRC for communication, even if that just means setting up RPC-forwarding of chat by sims at fixed intervals.

We can do this now with IRC bots, but they're rather clunky. :p

To me sl is a glorified chat room already, so what is the point other than a bunch in the same area, oh wait that's the WA and from what I have seen there no thank you.

And this forum is just a really high latency chat room, but you're here, no? ;)
