"Demo" mode texture upload

Nothing is more annoying than spending L$10 on a texture upload, only to find out that the prim you wanted to put it on distorts what you crafted horribly. If it's not an av texture, you can't preview it...

...so why not make a free or $1L "Demo upload" version of a texture..that either watermarks the texture with a giant red DEMO or, better yet, expires the texture from the system after 24hrs?

This would allow us to do some texturing on complex objects or prims without busting the bank.

in my experience even the AV preview is barely usable... since the AV 'doll' is untextured
otherwise you cant see interactions of tatts, skin texture, etc.

I'd take it one more step and have the ability to preview the texture on your own AV or on a particular prim by using something similar to the land Media texture.

A Replace This Texture With Pending Upload could be done completely client-side so that only you would see it. Set the generic Plywood texture to the pending upload so that anything you have laying around would preview it on a prim. Or if you indicate the upload is for AV Head, Torso, Lowerbody, have it show up on your AV. Just like the streaming Media this would be done by telling OpenGL to use that local texture instead of an asset server texture.

That's a pretty nice idea if it's easily doable. :)

I think there might be issues with searching for every object that has the demo texture and then stripping the texture out of every item it has been applied to. Plus, if the demo texture is not non-transferable it can cause even more trouble.

I feel this shows a bigger issue. If there was an offline object builder application it would not only allow for a more user friendly building environment, but it could also allow for texture testing on the local machine before uploading.

Er, you wouldn't need to do that. The sample texture wouldn't be uploaded to the sim at all, it would just replace the selected demo texture in your client on your own screen. Think about the way the media texture works... you don't upload the video to the sim and have it come back in texture updates, the client transparently replaces the texture with the embedded quicktime movie and passes that on to OpenGL.
