This may have been asked in the past.. I have no idea. But, why are there no options for pets in SL?

I've seen very novice-looking animals used as garden decor and such, but there's nothing in place for having a pet to care for? Does it all stop at Furry avatars?

We build and script our own pets. I've got one in the works (17th in the inbox pile).

Just like any other content in Second Life, it's up to the residents to create virtual pets.

Hi Qyonu. Welcome to SL. :)

There are options for literally almost anything you want. They're called the building and scripting tools. With them you can make pets, wildlife, houses, games, anything.

While it would be nice if there were BETTER tools specifically for making NPC type objects like pets & wildlife, it's certainly not the case that there are none. The tools for creating them are the same tools for creating anything else.

The biggest reason you don't see very many of them around is because they're relatively hard to make. It's much easier to slap a few cylinders together and call it a rocket ship than it is to invest the considerable time it takes to make an animal look realistic, let alone script it to "behave". Also, not everyone has enough land to accomodate the high number of prims it takes to sculpt organically. If it's a choice between a giant mansion or a cute little squirel with the same number of prims, most people will choose the mansion.

As for simplistic looking pets though, there are tons. A good example would be Eckhart Dillon's Yip-Yips and his combat-enabled droids. They're really quite brilliant, but they're not exactly cute & fuzzy if that's what you want.

If you want a pet you need to "care for", like a Tamagotchi or something, it's just a question of building it to look how you want and scripting it to behave how you want, just like any other object. Now that you mention it, I think you're right that this type of thing probably hasn't been done in SL before. My advice is make it work, or hire someone to make it work, and then sell, sell, sell. You may have just invented the latest SL craze.

geeez, I have a pig who talks, a spider who follows me around, a green dragon, a purple dragon (both talk randomly and follow) a spybot who follows and best of all a one of a kind custom snowbug that does everything a pet should do and more from Kim Anubis! so yeah, lots of pets! oh and I wear my pet raven on my shoulder....

Jesad Seraph makes several animals, which can be set to wander. Therefore, it is possible to set creatures free in Sl, and she in fact has a group dedicated to this very task.
