Perhaps we should have a forum just for posts that debate whether SL is a game or not. It seems to enter every freaking thread. *grins*

WHY!!!
We don't need that cos then it would just fuel the arguments, it only seems to come up in money threads and tbh, if you don't wanna here it's just a game then don't go into the money threads ![]() ![]() _____________________

Ha, try Googling for "is Second Life a game".
![]() It doesn't come up NEARLY enough in those results -- but I concur, on the forums, it's a: RRL = Really Redundant Loop SL is a game to me. And more. And more. Oh noes, I'm being redundant! *grins* _____________________

Are you saying SL is a game?
I'll provide you 1000 reasons why its n- *edited by redundancy police* I imagine this arguement will go on till the end of time. I'm not sure how much a seperate forum would help... how many off-topic threads still end up in General? I'm indifferent to the idea. _____________________

It's clearly just a game. Why would you need a forum to debate this?

Horse racing, like Second Life, is a game. Horse racing, like Second Life, is a game where people with specialized talents can make money and earn a living. Horse racing, like Second Life, has no API and cannot be used to develop new ways of seeing the world and facilitating communications.
Second Life is a game. _____________________

hehe, people debate the idea while saying lets not even bother.
so I will bother even though you could take the other post and copy paste here about 100 pages that would all fall into the RRL. http://lindenlab.com/about.php Linden Lab is a privately held company established to develop an extraordinary new form of shared 3D entertainment. Through its first product, "Second Life," Linden Lab offers a truly collaborative, immersive and open-ended entertainment experience, where together people create and inhabit a virtual world of their own design. LL made SL as a program designed to entertain. If it's your opinion that any form of entertainment is a game, then you have your answer. Off the top of my head I can think of hundreds of entertainment products that aren't games, such as television. Many people will contribute the existance of a game within SL and making SL itself a game. This idea is incorrect. While there are games, SL itself has no TRUE goal or end. What qualifies a product as a game. To me it has to have an extablished goal to achieve a win. SL has no established objective that once completed will end the "game" and make the entire playerbase restart at the begining of the "game". With all the fun intresting things going on in SL it would be easy to equate fun with game, but SL is an entertainment program, not a game. You can try to justify any contrary arguement by listing examples of games within the world, but player content within SL dosen't change SL's function. I won't bore you with the definition of "game" but if you look it up, you will find it revolves around structured competition and goals. SL revolves around an interactive 3D community of people seeking entertainment and social stimulation. if you still feel SL is a game, I would like you to explain where and how it fits into that small mold. ![]() _____________________

If you still feel SL is a game, I would like you to explain where and how it fits into that small mold. ![]() Dictionary.com: Game n. 1. An activity providing entertainment or amusement; a pastime: party games; word games. For me, SL is playtime, and is therefore a game. |
