It puts a minor delay into the script though, so not good for rapid-fire debug messages or anything.

The best way to get around it is to have a script that waits for linkmessages and IMs the appropriate user. That way, there's no slowdown on the original script.

Or better still, a pool of scripts. That's what I use for "rapid-fire" email and all sorts of other stuff.
