JPEG 2000, the image formsat SL uses, has some metadata capabilities; is there anyway that Linden Lab could use this to better protect textures from being stolen? Perhaps embedding a date and owner into the image; then if someone tried to re-upload the stolen texture, their program could check and see if it belonged to someone else. Obviously, it'd be simple enough for someone with the talent to strip out (or resave) the file, but at least this would offer a bit of protection for copyright holders.

The only way LL could do this would be to watermark the images, which would degrade quality. It is a trivial think to lift raw images from video card memory. In effect bypassing any encryption and tagging that Jpeg2k supports.
