Lens flare is an overdone, unnecessary visual effect that only truly applies--surprise, surprise--when looking through an artificial lens (like a video camera). The normal human eye doesn't see this effect.
However, what SL's sun needs is a better gradient surrounding it that doesn't look so cloudy. I made one for Active Worlds that looks decent and more realistic but it has a slight seam around the outside edge: ![]() It's too bad Rico didn't link a discussion thread to the proposal... |

I never look at the sun - one can go blind doing that, you know.

You can't go blind looking at a pure white texture (which is what any computer image--including pictures of the real sun--can EVER fully be as bright as). There's a BIG difference between SL's sun and the real sun--learn why.

Er, I know. It was a joke.
Although it is also true that my monitor is powered by its own fusion plant. |

Oops...you forgot your joke smiley.
But until your monitor outputs enough radiation to hurt your eyes when looking at it, it ain't gonna simulate a sun... |

I did accidentally turn the brightness up to full once, and it burned a hole in the wall opposite.

Uh huh. You can stop being an idiot now--really. <eyeroll> Yeah and you can stop being so stuckup O.o gosh Anyhoooo, yeah I think the sun in SL is a bit nothing, just a ball, but the moon is really great tho. But if you think about it, in RL, if you ever did it, when you look straight at the sun that's all you see, a ball, there is no glow or anything around it, it's a straitgh-edged sphere and that's it. Mmmh *shrug*. _____________________

Mmmh *shrug*. Um, no it's not. You should learn to pay attention when you look at things more carefully (you might also see I wasn't--and aren't--stuck up; I simply have little patience for those who don't know how to--or won't--communicate their emotions sufficiently in writing). The sun has PLENTY of glow (and rays from refraction) when you look at it. SL's sun is simply unrealistic for the most part: it doesn't move smoothly (or the moon), its gradient is incorrect, and its light never gets obscured/reduced by clouds. SL lighting needs a LOT of work... |

haha, funny this thread was getting a bit tense.LL on holidays changes the sun & moon textures. They should put that up on July 12 in homage to the death of disco. _____________________

Lens flare is an overdone, unnecessary visual effect that only truly applies--surprise, surprise--when looking through an artificial lens (like a video camera). Second Life's default camera mode is --suprise, suprise-- in third person which is a lot more akin to an artificial lens than a human eye. If you're going to be condescending and insulting at least make some sense when you do it - especially if you're going to complain about others' inability to convey their meaning in writing. On an unrelated note, I would like to commend LL's human resource department on making a very good decision. |

The 3rd-person cam is linked to the av head and is not necessarily a separate camera, per se. However, what you are implying is at least partially correct so lens flare, if it has to be implemented at all (hopefully not) COULD, concievably be enabled when the camera is focused on something OTHER than the avatar (doesn't move around with the head while moving the mouse), but I would hope such an effect would be optional as I don't like lens flare at all.
As for your other comment, I never claimed I was good at dealing with (surprise, surprise, look in the mirror) condescending idiots like you (that's what Torley and other PR buffer Lindens are for) but I'm VERY technical-minded. <shrug> Too bad this forum doesn't have a mute option too... |

I want a blue one. A blue dwarf would be most interesting. Torley kindly pointed out that personal attacks are not consistant with the rules. As for lense flare, there is no reason it couldn't be a feature that could be turned off in settings, like rippling water. _____________________

Wouldn't be as fast updating as a built in effect, but you could totally make lens flare as a HUD attachment couldn't you?
