Basic Snapshot editting

How many of us take snapshots, but have to save them to disk, open them up in some mem-eating image editor, and have to crop, resize, and otherwise edit them before we want to share them on SL? Even if it's not for an advertisement, just to share a photo with your friends.

I propose that SL add some very basic image-editting tools for Snapshots (and maybe textures), such as crop, resize, and maybe a text tool.
For Crop, we could either select an area in out Viewer to take a picture of (instead of taking huge pic of your av, the background, the group of people in the right corner, the sky...), of crop the snapshot before we upload/save (in that quick preview window that shows us the image before we upload it).
For resize - either pre-set a size for snapshots to be take at, or allow resizing of the image before upload/save (in the same window mentioned above)
Also adding a text tool or very basic paintbrush, so we can add notes or circle things. My main idea is for Crop and Resize to be added.

If you wanted anything more than the features suggested above, you're probably better of using a 3rd party image editor anyway.

I strongly agree with this.

I love this Idea - can you add script enabled taking of snaps as well ?

Eg

llTakeSnapshot( snap_name,<bottom_corner>,<top_corner>, show_ui, show_hud );

Sure it wouldnt take a rocket scientist to work out if the script is in an object that has a client (pc) attached to it via owner, sit, or touch.

Sounds a bit of a topic for script features rather than Snapshot, but not entirely a bad idea. ^^; I'd be worried about it violating the TOS... sounds like it could spawn a new type of bug/spy device...
What use did you have in mind for it?

I don't think llTakeSnapshot() is technically feasible, unless it only worked in HUD attachments. Because all a snapshot is is the image data you're currently viewing being dumped. For objects to do it the simulator would have to render everything that that object can see, probably not good :P

I definitely agree on this! Especially as I have a widescreen monitor, so my snapshots always come out squidged except for ones I wish to view on a widescreen 'TV' at my house in SL.

ah! Haravikk Mistral raises a point I forgot to add - some of us have really big screens or resolutions (like me), so we end up with massive screenshots. I'm sure SL really appreciates the space those shots are taking up on their servers...
*rallys more support*

Well, you can run SL in windowed mode... this is a way to crop your photo before you snap it. Re-size the window to eliminate those people in the right corner before you snap the pic.

As for a basic text-editor, this is totally possible pre-snap as well. Use something like a transparent XyText board, where only the characters are visible. You could even upload different type-sets/fonts... and use multiple XyText boards for multiple font-sizes. Wanna circle something? A thin, hollow cylinder would work.

Obviously, my suggestions wouldn't work for spur-of-the-moment snaps, but they work great for making a series of textures for vendor, occassion/date-stamped portraits, or simply to take a picture of yourself/your house with subtitles.

Resizing the window doesn't "crop" it "resizes." The only way it crop is if the window proportions change.

Funny, on my computer, resizing the window both crops AND resizes. I'm on a widescreen, but that shouldn't matter. I'm able to crop right down to a small square in the center of the screen just by resizing the window.

But, a nasty side-effect is that my chat/IM text no longer crosses the entire bottom of the screen. It seems to only fill the smallest width of I'd shrunk the window. And that's only a few characters... very annoying. Have to relog to reset the chat width.. Chalk up another bug.

An option (it should be default) to save as a .jpg would be extremely handy and save lots of space all over. I always wince when I see a forum post with .bmp images to download.

I sell a camera system - adding a snapshot button would be a nice addition - as well as having things like triggered snapshots ( at timed intervals for things like photo shoots ), or the ability to snap via chat.

As for the snap taking everything the object can see - thats why i said sit or touch - then the snap would be of what the avatar can see.

(Yes i know it is a simple thing to press the button - but wouldnt it be nice if you could put it in a script and automate it)

Next up on the suggestion list would therefore also have to be grabbing the texture key of the snap and using it on a prim ( have a prim being updated with what you can see )

key = llTakeSnapShot( etc )

But just idle dreaming :-)

Yes, this is a great idea. I love snaping pictures all the time, would be nice to have different features, lights, shadows, ect... instead going the longest way.
