I learned tonight that if a person mutes you, you are not informed of that fact. I have been needing to talk to someone and I have sent a number of unanswered IM's. I jumped to the conclusion that I was being ignored. This is a little confusing and upsetting, but if I knew for sure if I was muted, I would not have wasted the time trying to talk to them.
It would more productive for me to know if someone has muted me. It is their business if they mute me, that is not the issue. But, if I am indeed muted, I would like to know so I dont waste my time trying to communicate with the person. Thinking that they are simply ignoring you seems worse to me than simply knowing that they have indeed muted you.
I am not sure why you are not notified if you are muted. I guess it is too protect the person doing the muting. But, it only seems fair that I know the status so I dont waste more time on them.

I agree, Loki. Very good idea. Along the same lines we really need some way for people to know that their IM wasn't received if the person they sent it to is over the IM cap. They have no way of knowing their message vanished into the void.

I saw Loki's hands move like he was typing something in this thread but nothing appeared.
Hmmm.....

Many times when I went to a class there were several people who were making so many "smart-ass" comments that I had to mute them so I could follow the instructor. Obviously these people were self-important but did not see themselves this way. So if I mute them and they see the mute I fiigure the chances are they will be pissed at me and potentially neg-rate me, I don't need that. Also figure that if someone muted you it is probably because they do not want to hear from you.

From: someone Originally posted by Eggy Lippmann There is an IM cap? Yep. If you receive too many IM's when you're offline you don't get them all. You get the message "Too many IM's. Delivery capped." Instead

Do the people IM-ing you get a notice that their IM won't be delivered if you go over your cap?

I think this might be a good thing. At an event once, someone asked whether people were informed when they had been muted. On hearing they were not, he said "Good" - and then proceeded to explain in great detail why he had muted ME!!!! I think he thought muting was two way.....

I wish they would add a feature where people don't try to talk to me when I am in busy mode.

I don't really care either way, but I lean towards disagreeing. If I mute you.. it means I *am* simply ignoring you. It just gives me a mechanism to do so efficiently. Why should I want you to receive a message from me telling you I'm ignoring you?! I'd rather let you figure it out for your dumb self. After all, you obviously did something to piss me off.

Well, I sent four messages over six days. It would have been nice to know from the start that they were not even getting the messages. It took my dumb self nearly a week to figure that out. I would have quit after day one had I known they had indeed muted me.
