Server Submission

I think it would be nice if people could actually submit their own servers to be used in the game as a sim as an option.
This would be great for people planning heavily scripted sims or low lag sims by reduced load.

Basically the servers would be colocationed in the Secondlife datacenter.
This might also be benificial to SL in that if people sold SL specific servers then the overall population may increase.

Just a suggestion.. let me know your ideas..

Welcome to Second Life! I highly suggest you read this old post o' quotes on the "ultimate plan."

At least, I'm hoping that will happen.

It'd be cool, but it sounds like a system management nightmare... a hodgepodge of machines, all different, none of which are actually guaranteed to work right...

I've been giving this some thought over the last couple of days, actually. My opinion is the best way to do something like this would be to write a parallel program with the same client and completely new net-and-asset code.

In my opinion, assets and sim connections on a "viral networking" scale (read: like BitTorrent) would just be incredible, and I feel that is in many ways the ultimate goal for some people.

"Second Lite," perhaps?

well LL could enforce system requirements format a hard drive and essentially have complete control over the system. In addition it would go through a burn in which im sure they already do to their current servers

Well, if you buy a private island you are getting a dedicated server. I agree with Lex, it would be a Systems Management nightmare for LL to accept all kinds of different hardware from people.

Yeah i do understand that you are getting your own dedicated server but . well not to diss LL but sometimes those servers just cant handle everything somebody may want to do with the sim...

If LL didn't want to go with this plan maybe they could offer packages in terms of 'lite' 'medium' and 'heavy' end servers
