Local sound is a wonderful invention. Now I propose another checkbox in the options, for Local Chat. Same as local sound only for Chat text. Nobody outside can see chat from inside, nobody inside can see chat from outside. I could use this to broadcast to my property without annoying the neighbor, and my neighbors chatty vendor is no longer an issue.

Please :)

I support this hehe, i know it's old, i know but it would be interesting for some projects on neighbourhooded little lands may need to use the chat instead of IM and would like to not disturb people around.

Dear lord NO.

How the hell is someone outside the plot supposed to know that the person two feet from them can't hear them?

See all the stuff in bold? Yeah. That's more than "implications".

Yes.

But thinking about it, i would like to have a checkbox for each thing, inside-outside/outside-inside since sometimes , if ur place is near some crowded place u need to leave since the chat is spammed with their conversations. The chat don't seems to be affected by phisical objects in the middle of the source and your avie producing that situattion. It happened to me when having a relaxed chat inside my house with someone, when some people were building a store next to the house.

Again, dear lord no. How is the person outside the plot supposed to know someone can't hear them or talk to them.

Destroying the primary method of communication for... what? Less audible shouting? Uh, no thanks. I like being able to shout 100m, regardless of what plot I'm on.

wow, this got revived after a while. Alright good point. So I ammend my original sugestion. Local chat would prevent anyone inside from being heard outside. There would be a warning icon such as the no scripts, no objects icons so people inside could tell their chat is limited to that plot. Anyone outside can still shout in, therby preventing any change in opperations for people not on said plot. This would serve as a method for making a plot secure to chat on, and still keep me from annoying my neighbor with announcements while allowing you the person on the outside to still shout to people on the property.

Essentially local chat would make chat one way, chat can go in, but it can't go out.

And what about those people who are just passing through?

Say you own a plot. You turn this on for a party or whatever. Party ends. You log off. Clueless newbie comes flying along, is on your plot, wants to say something to someone else three feet away. He has no idea how to turn on plot lines, so he doesn't know where he can move to in order to be heard.

This just unecessarily complicates chatting within SL and affects people in ways they have no say in. One shouldn't be able to keep Person A from speaking to Person B.

Also, you just KNOW some griefer is going to buy up a large plot, split it into 16m2 squares, and turn each one into a silent zone individually. No one in the entire area would be able to speak to anyone else anywhere. Frustrating.

Just have a large Cone of Silence drop down over the plot when that's turned on. Nobody could miss that. :D

Maybe a forced visual icon showing that the plot is in silence mode would solve that problem. I am sure there are other good solutions to what u say.

I still supporting the idea, i want to be able to be in my plot without having my chat spammed by anyone if possible, i can also take my house to the sky etc... but the landscape, i love the landscape don't u?

Still supporting this, i would like to see more oppinions about the subject.

Thank u.

I've been thinking about this, and the problems moleculor points at are quite difficult to avoid, also what i said about an icon showing that a certain land it's silenced would be a problem, the only workable sign would be a message on the UI aswell as you get PG or MATURE and NO FLY ZONE etc... you can get CONE OF SILENCE or whatever.

Anyway, there is another option, maybe better, it is making the "cone of silence" avatar based and not land based. As you can silence two or more avatars being in any land. It's the equivalent of a group IM on the chat and without hearing anyone out of the group.

It would be easier (i suppose) to adapt the Talk To feature (does anyone uses this) to be able to host more than one avatar and to act as a cone of silence.

Both solutions solve the griefing problem or the newbie problem imo.

Right, because the world desperately needs more ban-lines.

na, I just want an icon like no script no object. those are easy enough to read and figure out. if newbs have trouble, well what else is new. They'll learn.
