I think it would be handy to have an option to display timestamps in the chat history window, and/or IMs. Sometimes if you step away for a few minutes, you don't know how recent something might've been said, or you might want to check if someone sent you a message 10 minutes ago, or an hour ago, if you didn't notice it at the time it was sent. Currently SL doesn't have any way to figure this out, be it in chat or IMs. I think timestamps would be a great feature to be able to turn on or off.
[7:58 AM] Artie Perun: blah blah blah [8:02 AM] Other User: Ooh timestamps... [8:03 AM] Another User: text goes here
Something like that when enabled. I don't think it'd put any extra load on servers whatsoever, as the timestamp insertion could be handled client-side I'm sure?

I think there's a proposal to this, and despite how useful and oft asked for it is, I'm surprised there aren't more votes. (No link, sorry)

But only as 24-hour format, which is inconsistent with how SL displays its time in AM/PM format. Also, no need to use the lengthy "[6:15 PM]" format when just "[6:15p]" will suffice (and is the same length as a 24-hour format of "[18:15]" for 12 hours anyway). An option for seconds would be nice too.
