I don't know -- like WoW's? Press and hold both mouse buttons and you can walk around turn, move, whatever without touching the keyboard or clicking on little arrows on the screen (lame).

I'm doing something similar by assigning the side buttons on my Microsoft Intellimouse Optical. Since we can already click-and-steer an avatar, I just made another button trigger the Up arrow so I keep walking forward.

I think what you're talking about is a feature that was added in 1.7. If you hold the left mouse button down on top of your av, it'll start walking and as long as u keep the button down u can steer with the mouse.

Does it actually work if you just press both mouse buttons anywhere? Don't have SL here to try atm.

You still have to use the arrow keys to make the AV move, you just get to steer with the mouse.

I think the idea of Aaron's thread is to be able to use just the mouse to move in a very convenient way. Not using the on-screen movement controls either. And for everyone, not using a workaround with a programmable mouse.

The on-screen movement controls do seem to work a bit better for me than they used to.

Suezanne understands me. I like to be able to use an application w/o touching the keyboard sometimes. I love WoW because of this, I can play for hours w/o ever touching the keyboard unless I need to hit my "EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY! DRINK MANA AND HEALTH POTION NOW!!!!" button.

As I understand mouse programming, unless they've changed it since the early 90's, the last time I programmed a mouse routine, both buttons being held down sends a different signal to the computer, and since as it is, holding both down right now does nothing, I think it'd be pretty easy to add.

But to be honest, I'd like to see Havok 2 first, so I'm not submitting it as a feature vote or anything.

If you can use just the mouse you can smoke and drink and eat donuts with the other hand.

A work around would be to use the virtual keyboard that is part of the windows accessibility accessory. That at least doesn't cost anything, although it it kinda huge. There might be some better such thingy at some freeware site.

OK... now I understand what you're saying. Don't know anything off the top of my head that maps mouse to keys, but I know of a nice little app that'll let you map joystick to just about anything. I've managed to set it up with a PS1 controller attached to my PC, using d-pad mapped to arrow keys, one of the analog sticks to mouse (so I can move the pointer when I need to), and various other buttons for mouse clicks, flying etc. Not quite the same thing I know, but another option maybe. The app is called Joystick 2 Mouse and it's free.

I'll keep an eye out for something that'll map mouse to keys, but I think you'll have trouble with the "press both mouse buttons" idea. You'll probably find it'll still pop up pie menus in SL.

A change in the program code is really the thing to look for to satisfy the thread starter's request.

Joypads

Can I agree with Joy2mouse as a solution. Just be warned that there are several versions out there, so hunt for the latest version you can. Mapping of keys is really easy. It is possible to have forward and backward for the Joystick Y axis and rotate for the X axis, which gives you pretty good control. A fire key to trigger mouse mode and the other joystick for looking round. It is even possible to use fire keys as modifiers to change what a joystick can do. Like pressing the ALT key does with the arrow keys.

In defence of keyboard and mouse, first person shooters use WASD for translational movement (including a much needed side step!) and the mouse for rotation. This has been a very successful approach. Having this 'standard' interface would add to SL in my opinion; especially in Jessie!

SL does have this standard interface! Doesn't it?! At least, I always use the WSAD to move around SL! Always have!

Yup it does. But it only works if you don't have the chat bar showing. The A & D are rotation in 3rd person, but sidestep in 1st person (Mouselook).

I think I can script this :). I'll try tonight. Well actually it would be when you click and hold on your avatar to look around you would start walking instead of just looking around like you do now. I can't make it require both mouse buttons though, sorry.

You're confusing the "my hands never need to leave the keyboard" interface with the "My hand never needs to leave the mouse" one.

As I mentioned earlier, if you have a mouse with more buttons, you can easily program another one (usually one of the sides, altho mice do vary) to be held down.

Effectively holding down two mouse buttons to walk forward. And I've set up others to fly, open inventory, and other common features. :)

Here's some more details...
From: Torley Torgeson
My experiment succeeded. :)

I'll explain what I did.

I have a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical.

http://www.benchmark.pl/artykuly/testy_online/myszki/ms_intellimouse_optical-1.jpg

Not the best modern mouse, by any means (and I am thinking of upgrading), but it has served me relevantly for the last few years.

This mouse has five buttons.
LEFT BUTTON
RIGHT BUTTON
WHEEL BUTTON
LEFT SIDE BUTTON
RIGHT SIDE BUTTON

I previously had the side buttons mapped to things like bringing up the Instant Message screen, Chat History, or Inventory. These configurations can easily be done with the Microsoft IntelliPoint drivers. Depending on your specific mouse, this may vary, but here's how I have it currently mapped out:

So what I can do is, click-and-hold on my avatar with the LEFT BUTTON to get mouse steering going. I wiggle around the mouse to change the direction I'm facing. Then, I hold down the LEFT SIDE BUTTON to start walking forward. Too slow? No prob, I either press WHEEL BUTTON to break into a trot (I'm a Torse) or press the RIGHT SIDE BUTTON to get flying, where I can really move quickly. If I want to go back down to earth, I just push that button again, and I'll freefall swiftly.

These are the specifics of what I'm doing, but the principles can be adapted to most modern multibutton mice, including ones especially designed for accessibility. :)

And it can all be done with one hand. :D
