A "Spam" blocker preference setting

How many times do you get an object, notecard or other item dropped on you by someone who is not actually in your friends list?

Some of the time these "gifts" are harmless bits of fun, notifications about events, or even return policy changes by your favorite hair designer. And some of the time they are not.

I'd like to see a new preference setting: "Allow unsolicited inventory" with three settings; "None", "From my groups", "All".

"None" will block unsolicited inventory from everyone, even people on your friends list.
"From My Groups" will allow stuff from pepple on your friends list, will block unsolicited inventory from people in your groups and block all others.
"All" will allow anyone to send you anything, anytime.

I don't know about you, but when receive an object from a stranger than asks me to rez it to find out how to get a "free sim 4 life / no joke" I won't be doing it. I was unsurprised to see the servers go down for maintenance shortly thereafter.

Help the Linden's keep spammers and griefers from causing major outages and help yourselb by reducing unsolicited inventory clutter!

Vote for this proposal! http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=726

I'd prefer an "allow from friends" in there as well.

I could see this being a problem, or hassle, if you need to get notecard info from objects. Of course, Lindens could be considered automatic 'friends' and their notecard-givers would always work... but other vendors wouldn't. Also, you'd have trouble getting demo/trial items from vendors that offer that feature. You'd basically need to toggle the option off and on as-needed. That would be fine too, although you'd need some sort of indication that an item has been blocked. It could work similar to the way a web browser indicates that a pop-up or cookie has been blocked... maybe a third status indicator next to your L$ amout, turns red for a few seconds each time a transfer is blocked.

Good catch Dyne - I agree that an Allow Friends would be needed too...

To Dote's point:

This is an excellent point. I think one way we could work with this is if someone clicks an object or pays for an object, then the object can vend whatever it is supposed to vend.

The objects I would like to prevent from giving me stuff are those that sense you landing somewhere and drop a note or a landmark on you. For myself, if I want a landmark I will make on at a place I like. And if I want a notecard I can click something to request it. :)

Also this is a great suggestion. It would be nice to know if unsolicited inventory has been blocked... maybe a system message in the chat log so you can IM the sender if you would like to.

Great ideas folks! Keep them coming.

Well, you could run into problem also with one of those networked vendor, or even with the well-known SLExchange website. Since the object that sent you the item is not the same one that you are touching, and most of all people do not have SLExchange account name in their friend list.

Seems like it could easily interfere with a lot of legitimate things.

I think spamming is already against the TOS but I still get a notecard/texture/IM about once a month.
