Didn't see anythign like this on the first 3 or 4 pages I scanned, so here goes:

How about a jabber-based IM service that would allow people not currently able to log in to the world itself to chat with groups and friends? The homepage allows us to see which of our friends is online, but it woudl be great to be able to send them an IM from outside SL

SOE implemented something like this for EQ, and while it was rife with bugs (as every steaming pile of monkey crap SOE touches is), it was a pretty handy tool.

LL has already stated plans to convert IM to a Jabber-based system at some point in the future, so I would imagine that when that happens, any Jabber client would probably work?

I imagine it would! glad to hear they already had this brewing.

I haven't yet figured out how to bypass the corporate firewall here so i can play at work...but it'd be nice to chat with my friends

Heh. You do realize that, at most companies,

Bypassing the firewall = Losing your job

:p

Yeah, no doubt. my other alternative is to somehow route one of the 'guest internet' connections up to my office. The guest internet is not hampered by the firewall/proxy server.

and since i manage the guest internet...it's just a matter of finding out where the switch/patch panel is and getting it to a jack in my office.
