I'm working on a pretty big scripting project. It'd be nice if there was a really basic text-search functionality, optionally with search/replace.

*rubba stamp!*
Hi Lex. ![]() Mind, I tend to do a lot of scripting outside of SL... ultraedit with a nice script hilighting file is wonderous. But for those who like their scripting in-world, this would certainly be handy. ![]() Personally, I'm holding out for the "Make it that way" button in the script editor, but I think I'm going to be waiting a while yet. ![]() _____________________

*stamp* Search/replace would be great. What text editor doesn't have this simple feature? (And speaking of search, I'm compelled to mention the need for inventory search.)
Also, it would be nice to be able to upload and download text files (scripts and notecards), including folders of text files. This would be easier than cutting and pasting and would make external editing easier. Or how about simple shell accounts on the server where the files are stored, so we can use a regular text editor directly on the files? (Yeah, I know this is a pipe dream for now.) Anyway, both of those methods are commonly used for web scripting. |

yus. this would be good.
Atm, if I want to find instances of a function or variable, I change the name in the original scope so it produces compile errors at each line it appears in. hehe. Crude, but it works! _____________________

I hate to state the obvious, but... why not just copy-paste your code into a text editor with a grep-like toolset for this?
Though it would be nice to have text search right in-world, copy-paste renders it little more than a "cool feature to have" in my opinion, since you can just do so much more with traditional text editors. ![]() _____________________

Yeah, Kris, I do that too, especially to find out if I'm no longer using a function I've defined
![]() I don't like the copy/paste external editor thing as a solution. It's annoying, and it seems too easy to have discrepancies between the two copies of the file. Plus, my computer really just doesn't like running SL in a window, so it'd be slow as hell. Finally, I don't like the idea that compiling isn't just a matter of hitting a button. The indenting in the SL editor annoys me, but I deal with it because it's much more convenient to script right there in-world. Which means I live with an editor that annoys me, so I'm going to feature-request to make it cooler ![]() |

I heavily endorse this. Simple text/compile editor options are desperatley needed, you shouldn't have to copy and paste it anywhere else.

Hmm

Well hmm....
In principle I like the idea of a more featured editor until I remember that SL has probably the best editor I have ever seen in a game (oh dear, am I allowed to say that? Game! HA! I said it again!) ... It's good for quick scripts. Those of you who played LP Muds back in the stone age and remember the line editor will probably agree (think "ed" or "ex" in Unix or "edlin" from DOS) What I'd rather see is an offline compiler. I use Scite with LSL highlighting for my bigger projects (highly recommended) but the biggest problem is that I have to cut and paste from that to the SL editor. How about a way to upload scripts directly like textures? --Jack Lambert edit - speaking of editors, check out the wiki for offline alternatives... LSL WIKI : AlternativeEditors |
