Just save the Chat history to a file on local disk. Is this not possible. I'm dying everytime I crash or log out without saving...

I heard that there are some scripted objects that can record chat text to notecard or some other kind of file.... can anyone out there share some info on this?

Script varibles are not lost when you log out. Therefore a script can listen on channel 0 and record what is said. It can then email you the log at a latter time.

Note: The TOS does not allow recordings of chat sessions without permision.

I have considered, and prototyped, writing some scripts to do this. It should be possible for Chat. But I stopped when I thought IM could not be recorded.

No you suggest that the IM could be recorded. How? Even if you have permissions, how do you get access to it from script?

Thanks
Felix

"chat" usually refers to channel 0 stuff in the "Chat" window.

IM's can't be recorded.

Edit: Unless you use a screen reader or possibly libSecondLife.

It does allow them, if you are actually there. It only disallows remote recordings, and it's against forum rules to post logs on the forum without permission.

Snoopy: I suppose you could wear this as an attachment, change its shape to a ring or something and it would work.

Every chat program in the world (almost) offers automatic logging. Yahoo, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ, even IRC clients log chat.

There is no reason why chat logging shouldn't be a part of the SL client. None whatsoever.

Oh, wait. Linden Laziness. Forgot that reason.

I would prefer having all IM sessions and the current chat history PRESERVED from login to login, not on the client but on the server, so that if I log in from a different computer it's all there.

(with a spacer of some sort in each IM tab and the chat history to indicate when the disconnect/logout occured.)

Quite often I avoid logging in because I know I have too many IM's to respond to... and not enough time to answer them all before I have to log out again.

While I tend to have a fairly stable client... there are far too many times when I have new unread IM's that are lost when I do encounter a crash.

Hopefully someone is giving this some consideration at LL.

And while we're on the topic... PLEASE grant us the ability to set an "outgoing message" to be displayed the moment someone opens a new IM session to us? For example:

Jopsy Pendragon auto-replies: "I'm in a deep anti-social script-trance... I might not reply anytime soon, if at all. Please don't take it personally. :)"

or:

Jopsy Pendragon auto-replies: "Party in TEAL! Ask for a TP or just drop in! :)"

libsecondlife can help here

Or, you could do like I did and use libsl to log all chat (ChatFromSimulator packets) and all instant messages (ImprovedInstantMessage packets) along with all relevant information on who said what when and where you were at that time to readable text files named and sorted by date.

It's easy, and if you are on a Windows box with Google Desktop installed it makes it really damned easy to look up any previous conversations.

If I suddenly get more free time from my rl job or become suddenly much more motivated, I would be willing to clean up and release that code. It's messy messy messy right now Or maybe the libsl core team will add that as an app?

Or for those of us using Linux w/ Mono, Beagle works just as well ;)

A chat/IM logging feature is a good idea. It would save you protect you from losing important text information when you crash or forget to save it to notecard.

Felix Wakmann sent me an IM in-game and requested the code that I use for logging SecondLife chat and IM messages, and I would like to respond here as well.

I use a custom version of the SLProxy from the libsecondlife guys. Unfortunately, it is custom because I am not a member of that team and needed to make some bug fixes and changes, so my version is not 100% compatible with the "official" version.

However, I did take my code and strip it down to just logging instant messages and chat and made it less ugly, and would be willing to send it to somebody that has the time and desire to share it with others and perhaps put some effort into making it compatible with the "official" SLProxy.

Some notes: I use VS2005 and .NET 2.0 exclusively, and the project file and code reflect this. If you do not use VS2005 (or C# Express 2005), this project will not work for you, sorry.

Anybody know a good place to put this project so that others can get to it and I do not have to email it to each individual?

I volunteer to be the guinea pig for testing this out with the default libSL/SLProxy. I'll find some way to host it when i get it working, and send a note to the group.

Totally annoying

I have LOST COUNT of the number of times I log in, see a flood of important IMs and start work on them and then crach and lose the lot I have lost friends, deals, sales, rentals and all sorts by this simple stupid error in not allowing IM messages to persist.

It MUST be changed as it's insufferable to lose all ur IMS after logging on and crashing and therefore give the impression to people u could never be bothered to answer.

WHEN will this be fixed??
